
St. Cloud State ends regular season with split at Minot State

The Huskies will now advance to play in the 2016 NSIC tournament, which will begin in St. Cloud, Minn. on Wednesday, May 11. The #3 seeded Huskies will begin play in the tournament with a 3 p.m. game against #6 seeded Minnesota Crookston on Dick Putz Field.
In the other first round games on May 11, #1 seed Minnesota Duluth will play #8 seed Sioux Falls on Joe Faber Field at 11 a.m. In the other 11 a.m. game, #4 seed Minnesota State will play #5 seed Concordia St. Paul. In the other game scheduled for 3 p.m. on May 11, #2 seed Augustana will play #7 seed Northern State at 3 p.m. on Joe Faber Field.
The tournament will continue through Saturday, May 14 on Joe Faber Field and Dick Putz Field at the Municpal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud. Tickets for all games will be available for purchase at the gate.
In game one on May 7 against Minot State, the Huskies owned a 2-0 lead after two innings before Minot replied with two runs to tie the game in the bottom of the second. Minot added one run in the third before the Huskies took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the fourth. Minot then took command of the game with three runs in the fifth inning and four runs in the sixth inning to gain an 11-5 edge. SCSU added one more run in the top of the seventh to make the final 11-6.
SCSU outhit Minot 14-7 in the game as Kevin Bolder was the pitcher of record in the game for SCSU with 5.1 innings of work and four strikeouts. Brandon Arnold and Zak Hoffman each had three hits in the game, which included Hoffman's 11th homer of the season in the game. Zach Hoffmann and Reese Gregory also had two hits apiece in the game.
In game two, SCSU relied upon an epic 11-run fourth inning to offset a six-run first inning by Minot. The 11 runs gave the Huskies a 13-8 lead in the fourth but Minot came back with four runs to close the gap to 13-12 in the fourth inning. The two teams tied the game up in the fifth inning at 14-14 before the Huskies added runs in the seventh, eighth and three in the ninth to bring home the 19-14 victory.
In the offensive showcase, SCSU outhit the Beavers 22-14. Kyle Lieser had four hits, four RBIs, three runs, a double and one homer in the game, while Gregory also had four hits, four RBIs, three runs, a double and a homer in the game. Judd Davis had four hits for SCSU in the game, while Brandon Arnold and Karl Sorensen each had three hits in the win.
Kyle Boser was the pitcher of record in relief of starter Tyler Gentz in the game. He pitched 2.1 innings in the game with two strikeouts. Ryan Diers, David Kroger (7 strikeouts) and Sheldon Miks (2 strikeouts) also helped to finish the game in relief.
