Volleyball Defeats MSU Moorhead in Four Sets

Moorhead, Minn. – Senior Becca Gruber put up 11 kills to lead the St. Cloud State volleyball team (15-10, 7-8 NSIC) to a four-set victory road victory over MSU Moorhead (9-14, 4-11 NSIC) on Saturday evening, Oct. 28, at the Nemzek Fieldhouse. The set scores were 25-17, 25-18, 12-25 and 25-13.
Gruber also hit .308, while picking up her match-high 11 kills plus a solo block and three block assists. Junior Krista Kuglin totaled 10 kills and three block assists. Freshman Erin Navratil totaled 10 kills, a .207 hitting percentage, two service aces plus 12 digs. Junior Micah Nier had six kills and five digs. Sophomore Marah Mulso totaled seven kills. Senior Nicole Miller had five kills and eight digs. Senior Kayla Crane recorded a match-high 23 assists plus four digs. Freshman Maddy Torve tallied 22 assists and seven digs. Sophomore Clara Krenz had a match-high 26 digs and two service aces. For the match, the Huskies had 53 kills, a .165 hitting percentage, 51 assists, seven service aces, 76 digs and nine blocks.
The Dragons were led by 10 kills from Kaylyn Jenkins. She also hit .320 for the match. Lauren Kiewiet had 17 assists plus eight kills and seven digs. Courtney Selbitschka had eight kills, nine digs plus two solo blocks and four block assists. Ellie Hoyt totaled 10 assists, three service aces and nine digs. MSUM had 33 kills, .141 hitting percentage, 32 assists, four service aces, 60 digs and 12 blocks
The Huskies won the first set 25-17 with Gruber, Navratil, redshirt freshman Abby Templin and Nier all having three kills.
SCSU won the second set by a 25-18 margin with Kuglin and Mulso each recording four kills.
The Dragons took the third set 25-12 and limited SCSU to just eight total kills in the set. Kuglin and Miller each had a pair of kills.
The Huskies won the set and the match with a 25-13 victory in the fourth set. The Huskies went on a 13-4 run to close out the set with Gruber leading the charge with her five kills.
SCSU volleyball now returns home to host three matches next week. The program has a stiff test on Tuesday, Oct. 31, with a 6 p.m. contest at Halenbeck Hall against No. 4 Minnesota Duluth. The program is also schedule to take on Sioux Falls on Friday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m. and wrap up the week against No. 1 Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m.
