#2 SCSU completes sweep with 5-1 victory over CC

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (9-2-0, 4-2-0 NCHC) completed its fourth weekend sweep of the 2017-18 season with a 5-1 victory over Colorado College (7-7-0, 3-5-0 NCHC) on Saturday, Nov. 18 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies scored three unanswered goals in the contest and never looked back to maintain its home winning streak at 8-0-0 in 2017-18. The sweep was set up by a 6-1 win by the Huskies on Friday, Nov. 17. The Huskies will now have a bye week on Nov. 24-25 before heading to NCHC rival Omaha on Dec. 1-2.
The evening's offense got started at 10:17 of the first period when Jacob Benson scored a power play marker with assists from Mikey Eyssimont and Jimmy Schuldt. This was Benson's fifth goal of the season and it also was Schuldt's team leading 11th assist of the campaign.
After a scoreless second period, SCSU took charge in the third when Easton Brodzinski scored his third goal of the season with a power play tally at 2:45. Nick Poehling and Jack Ahcan each provided assists on the play. This was Nick Poehling's first assist of the season for the Huskies. The goal proved to be the eventual game winner for SCSU. Of note, the assist was Ahcan's 30th career point at SCSU.
Seconds later, rookie blueliner Luke Jaycox scored his first collegiate goal at 3:18 of the third with assists from Judd Peterson and Patrick Newell to make it 3-0.
The Tigers narrowed the gap to 3-1 with a power play goal by Mason Bergh at 6:20 but the rally was shortlived as Newell replied with a power goal of his own at 8:02 of the third to make it 4-1. Brodzinski and Ryan Poehling each provided assists on the play.
To finalize the scoring, Peterson notched his first goal of the 2017-18 season with an empty net goal at 16:19. Kevin Fitzgerald added his fourth assist of the year on the goal. This was SCSU's fifth empty net goal of the season.
Jeff Smith was the goalie of record for the Huskies with 22 saves and one goal allowed in the game. On the weekend, Smith only allowed two goals in two complete game starts - and both of those goals were power play goals by CC. Â
SCSU outshot the Tigers 39-23 in the contest as Alex Leclerc took the loss for CC with 34 saves to his credit. On the power play, SCSU got back into the groove by going 3-of-7 on the advantage. CC was 1-of-5 on the power play in the game.
