Football Upended 17-10 By Bemidji State

Bemidji, Minn.  – St. Cloud State's football team (6-4, 3-3 NSIC North) lost a 17-10 road contest to Bemidji State (7-3, 5-1 NSIC North) in windy and cold conditions on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 4, at Chet Anderson Stadium.
Sophomore John Solberg totaled five catches for 128 yards in the loss for SCSU. Sophomore Dwayne Lawhorn ran for a touchdown and connected on 15 passes for 209 yards, but also threw two interceptions and fumbled the ball. He was also sacked three times in the contest. Redshirt freshman Derek Kumerow had three catches for 39 yards. Senior Gary Koehring led the defense with his 10 tackles including 1.5 stops for loss. Junior Jack Horter totaled eight tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and two tackles for loss. Senior Brady Westart had seven tackles, 1.5 sacks, 1.5 stops for loss and a fumble recovery. Junior Jake Schley accumulated six tackles plus a sack. Sophomore Ferris Ingraham had five tackles and a sack. Senior Jeremy Koffi picked off a pass that he returned for 28 yards. Redshirt freshman Josh Kren and sophomore Matthew Lechner both recovered fumbles.
BSU was led by Jordan Hein's 111 yards rushing. Andrew Lackowski totaled 57 rushing yards and a score. Hein completed five passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. Gunner Olszewski had seven tackles, a sack and two forced fumbles.
SCSU totaled 11 first downs, 209 yards through the air and 28 yards rushing in the contest. BSU picked up 13 first downs, 199 yards rushing and 64 yards passing. The Huskies won time of possession 30:0 to 29:52. The program has won TOP in all but one game this season.
The Huskies scored first with Lawhorn's three-yard run finishing off a nine play, 31-yard drive in the first quarter to give SCSU a 7-0 lead after the made Adam Stage extra point at the 2:18 mark of the first quarter.
The Beavers answered and tied the game at seven all as Hein threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to J. Anderson. The Ian Aanerud extra point was good to knot the contest up with 7:18 remaining in the second quarter.
The game remained knotted at seven until midway through the third quarter when Stage finished off a 13 play, 78-yard drive with his 19-yard field goal to put SCSU up 10-7.
BSU again drove down the field to tie the game up as Aaerud hit a 34-yard field goal at the 10:08 mark of the fourth quarter to complete an 11 play, 23-yard drive.
The Beavers would take the lead for good on Lackowski's seven-yard run to finish off the six play, 65-yard drive. The Aanerud extra point was good to give BSU a 17-10 advantage with 4:17 remaining in the game. The Huskies would have two more attempted drives to tie the game, but one ended in an interception and the other one was turned over on downs after a failed fourth down from the BSU 25-yard line.
St. Cloud State's football team returns home to host Minot State on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m.

Notes: The 128 yards receiving was the third time that John Solberg has eclipsed the 100-yard barrier this season...The team's 28 yard rushing was only the second time the program failed to run for 100 yards in a game this season (76 yards – Minnesota Duluth – 9/28)...The team's five sacks was the third time this season and 16th time since 2008 that the program has had five or more sacks in a game...The Huskies have now dropped three straight games to Bemidji State and lead the series 37-21-3 since the teams started playing in 1927.
