Huskies split in action at U.S. Bank Stadium in 2017 opener

The nationally ranked St. Cloud State University baseball team kicked off its 2017 season with a doubleheader split against Concordia-St. Paul in the Huskies' playing debut at U.S. Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis on Monday, Feb. 27.
Playing under the roof of the new Minnesota Vikings' stadium for the first time, the Huskies posted a 3-1 setback against the Golden Bears in game one before rallying to gain a 7-2 victory in game two of the twinbill. Â The games marked a return to indoor baseball in Minnesota for St. Cloud State, which had the opportunity for many years to play early season games in the old Minneapolis Metrodome before it was torn down to make way for U.S. Bank Stadium.
In game one, the Huskies' Mathew Meyer scored one run in the second on an RBI by Cody Rutledge.  CSP rallied with three runs in the top of the third inning to ice the victory.  Sheldon Miks was the pitcher of record for SCSU with 4.0 innings of work with seven hits and three runs allowed.  Dominic Austing completed the game for SCSU with a scoreless 3.0 innings of work. In the game, CSP had eight hits and SCSU had four.
Meyer had two hits in the game, including a double, to pace the Huskies on offense.
In game two, the Huskies got things rolling early with a five-run second inning that proved to be all they needed to gain the first win of the season for SCSU.  Jordan Joseph, Bo Schmitz and Hayden Gerlach all had two hits apiece in the game for the Huskies.  Joseph posted three RBIs, a double and a triple in the game.  Jackson Goplen also posted a triple in the contest and Schmidt added a double in the winning effort.
On the mound, Cal Giese was the winning pitcher for SCSU with five innings of work, one run allowed and just four hits allowed. Â He also had four strikeouts in the game. Â Kevin Bolder and Miles Nablo completed the game in relief of Giese. Â Overall, SCSU outhit the Golden Bears 9-5. Â Of note, CSP scored one run in the third and one run in the seventh during the game.
SCSU will return to action on March 4 with a game against Azusa Pacific in Tucson, Ariz. Â The game will kick-off a nine-game road swing for the Huskies in Tucson, Ariz.
