St. Cloud State baseball continues success with WSU sweep

The regionally ranked St. Cloud State University baseball team continued to chart impressive results with a 4-2 and 8-1 doubleheader sweep against Winona State University on Sunday, April 23 at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. The Huskies now own a 32-12, 23-9 NSIC record, while Winona State moves to 13-27, 13-17 NSIC in 2017.
The Huskies have now won 30-plus games in each of the last nine seasons during the Pat Dolan era - dating back to 2009. SCSU currently ranks third in the NSIC with a 23-9 record, while Minnesota State, Mankato is first at 29-3 and Augustana is second at 24-6. The Huskies will complete their 2017 NSIC regular season with a doubleheader at Minot State on April 26 followed by a home twinbill against Bemidji State on May 4 and a road doubleheader at Bemidji State on May 6.

In game one against Winona, the Huskies scored two runs in the first inning to take a 2-1 lead. Bo Schmitz connected on a sacrifice fly to score Judd Davis, while a double by Mathew Meyer scored Jordan Joseph. In the third inning, Mitch Mallek reached on an error that scored Davis before a single by Schmitz scored Mitch Mallek. Winona State added one more run in fourth to make the final score 4-2. Davis and Meyer each had two hits in the game for SCSU.
Zach Siggelkow was the pitcher of record for SCSU in game one with 5.2 innings and four strikeouts and six hits allowed. Miles Nablo came in to finish the game in relief and picked up the save.
In game two, SCSU took an early command of the game by scoring four runs in the second inning, then two more runs in the third inning and one run in the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead. Winona State added one run in the fifth inning before the Huskies capped the scoring with one run in the eighth inning to make the final 8-1. The Huskies outhit Winona State 19-7 in the second game as Judd Davis had four hits and one RBI in the game. Ethan Ibarra had three hits and three RBIs and Mathew Meyer had three hits and two runs for SCSU.
On the mound, Aaron Hammann was the winning pitcher with 8.0 innings of work that included four strikeouts, seven hits allowed and one run allowed. Kevin Bolder finished the game with 1.0 innings of relief work.
