Huskies bring back a pair of wins from Minot on April 26

The St. Cloud State University baseball team (34-12, 25-9 NSIC) scored a pair of key NSIC victories at Minot State University (22-18, 17-15 NSIC) on Wednesday, April 26 in Minot, N.D.
The victories helped the Huskies maintain their third place standing in the 2017 NSIC race, which will conclude next week for SCSU with games against Bemidji State. The Huskies will enjoy a bye this weekend before hosting Bemidji State at Joe Faber Field on May 4 followed by a road doubleheader at BSU on May 6. The wins against Minot were critical as the Huskies are looking to obtain another NCAA tournament bid and clinch a bid for the upcoming NSIC tournament.
The Huskies will host the NSIC tournament at Joe Faber Field and Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud, Minn. on May 11-14. SCSU also gained a number four ranking in the NCAA Division II Central Region poll, which was released on April 26.
In game one at Minot, the Huskies broke a 0-0 shutout in the fourth inning with a three run bomb by Logan Swann, which brought home Mathew Meyer and Bo Schmitz. The Beavers ralled with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and two runs in the sixth inning to make the score 5-3. SCSU used the long ball once more in the seventh inning to tie the game with a two-run shot by Jordan Joseph, which scored Cooper Maas.
Meyer then singled to scored Mitch Mallerk to make it 6-5. The game winning runs were the result of an error by Minot, which allowed Meyer and Schmitz to score. Minot completed the game's offense with a homer in the seventh, which made the final tally 8-6.
In the game, SCSU outhit Minot 12-6. Cal Giese was the winning pitcher for SCSU with six innings of work that included seven strikeouts and five hits allowed. Miles Nablo gained the save with one inning of work to close the game. At the plate, Swann had two hits and three RBIs for the Huskies while Joseph, Meyer and Schmitz also posted two hits apiece in the contest.
In the nightcap, the Minot State gained a 1-0 lead int the second inning before the Huskies tied the contest in the fourth inning with a single by Ethan Ibarra that scored Meyer. The defense took over from that point and lasted until the Huskies' Mallek scored in the top of the ninth on an error to make it 2-1. MSU added one run in the bottom of the ninth to push the game into extra innings.
The win was then sealed for SCSU in the top of the 10th with an RBI ground ball by Ibarra that scored Swann.
Dominic Austing, the reigning NSIC Pitcher of the Week, produced another dominating performance with 8.1 innings of work in the game that included nine strikeouts, seven hits allowed and two runs allowed. Nablo ended up as the pitcher of record in the game with 1.2 innings of relief work that included three hits allowed.
SCSU and Minot State both had 10 hits apiece in the game. Judd Davis, Ibarra and Cooper Maas all had two hits in the game for the Huskies.

- Jordan Joseph now has four home runs in 2017, which ranks second on the team behind Jackson Goplen (with six). Jospeh also leads the club with 45 RBIs this season.
- Cal Giese leads the Huskies this season with eight victories. He is 8-2 with a sterling 1.81 ERA in 2017.
- Relief ace Miles Nablo paces the club with four saves and a 4-1 record in 2017. His ERA is tops on the team at 1.67.
- Dominic Austing was named the NCBWA Division II Central Region Pitcher of the Week on April 26. He leads SCSU with 73 strikeouts in 2017.
- Mathew Meyer leads SCSU with 60 hits and a .353 batting clip this spring.
