Huskies advance with 3-2 victory over Augustana on May 11

The #25 St. Cloud State University baseball team (38-14) advanced in the winners' bracket of the 2017 NSIC Championships with a 3-2 victory over #2 seed Augustana University (36-21) on Thursday, May 11 at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud, Minn.
The victory sets up a Noon meeting on Friday, May 12 against #1 seed Minnesota State University, which advanced in its half of the winners' bracket with a 3-2 win in 11-innings over Wayne State College. Â The Huskies and Mavericks will play at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. Â Tickets for the game can be purchased at the gate.
In the other NSIC tournament games on May 11, Minot State scored a 3-2 win over Minnesota Crookston to eliminate the Golden Eagles from the tourney. Â Minnesota Duluth also gained a 3-2 win over Concordia-St. Paul to advance and eliminate the Golden Bears. Â In the evening games, UMD and Wayne State are playing on Dick Putz Field and the Augustana and Minot State are playing on Faber Field. Â The two winning teams of the evening games will advance to play on Friday.
In the victory over Augustana, the Huskies charged to a 2-0 lead in the third inning after an RBI single that scored Cooper Maas and Ethan Ibarra.
Augustana replied with two runs in the fourth inning to tie the game.  The defensive battled continued through the eighth inning at which time a bases loaded walk by Ibarra provided the Huskies with the go ahead run when Mathew Meyer crossed the plate.
In the game, Augustana outhit the Huskies 9-7. Â Cal Giese started the game for SCSU and went 6.0 innings with eight strikeouts and six hits allowed. Â Kyle Boser was the pitcher of record with 1.1 innings of work, while Miles Nablo gained the save with 1.2 innings of relief work. Â Nablo added two strikeouts to push SCSU's game total to 10 strikeouts.
At the plate, Jackson Goplen led SCSU with two hits and Mallek had one hit and two RBIs in the contest.
