Huskies will face Augustana or UMD in a semifinal elimination game Friday evening
ST. CLOUD—The St. Cloud State baseball team's (38-15, 27-11 NSIC) bats were held in check by top-seeded Minnesota State on Friday afternoon as it fell, 6-3, at the NSIC Tournament.
With the loss, the No. 3 Huskies will face either No. 2 Augustana or No. 6 Minnesota Duluth in a semifinal elimination game Friday evening. The winner of that match-up will meet the Mavericks in the tournament finals on Saturday, May 13 at 12 p.m.
SCSU was unable to get much going against MSU senior right-hander Mitchell Bauer, who retired the first 11 batters he faced and 13 of the first 14. Bauer's lone mistake in seven innings of work was a two-run home run off the bat of Huskies senior outfielder Logan Swann in the top of the fifth—which briefly gave SCSU a 2-1 advantage.
But the Huskies were unable to contain Minnesota State's potent offense after gaining the lead and failed to record a one-two-three inning in the contest. The Mavericks rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth and tacked on three more in the sixth to stake themselves to a definitive 6-2 lead.
St. Cloud State redshirt junior Bo Schmitz stroked a one-run single in the eighth to bring his team within three, but that was as close as the Huskies came. They stranded two in the eighth and went down in order in the ninth.
After opening with three scoreless frames, sophomore southpaw Zach Siggelkow took the loss—finishing with three runs allowed in 4.2 innings of work.
