Huskies Advance to NSIC Tournament Championship Game with 5-2 Win over UMD

ST. CLOUD - The St. Cloud State baseball team (39-15, 27-11 NSIC) kept their tournament title hopes alive with a 5-2 win over the University of Minnesota Duluth to earn a spot in the NSIC Tournament Championship Game.Â
The Bulldogs (26-28, 18-19 NSIC) drew first blood in the game when a double brought in two runners from the bases to give the visitors a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. The Huskies would answer immediately, with Mitch Mallek sneaking past home plate on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 2-1.Â
The Huskies would do the remainder of the scoring in the game, although at a spread out pace. Jackson Goplen would go yard in the fourth to tie the game at two runs a piece. Bo Schmitz would then enable the Huskies to take the lead in the fifth inning when he would send one over the fence in left field and then make the full trip around the bases, bringing Mallek around with him.Â
The final Huskies run would be scored in the bottom of the seventh when Schmitz would hit a single to bring Judd Davis in to bring the score to its final position at 5-2.Â
The Huskies were outhit in the victory by the Bulldogs by a 9-7 margin, and neither team committed an error. Starter Austin Caspersen was dealt the win for the Huskies moving his season record to an impressive 6-1. Aaron Hammann earned his first save of the season for his relief work, and Baumgard was handed the loss for Minnesota Duluth.Â
