Huskies fall 4-2 to Minnesota State in NSIC Championship Game

ST. CLOUD - The St. Cloud State Huskies (39-16, 27-11 NSIC) fell to the Minnesota State Mavericks (44-9, 35-5 NSIC) by a 4-2 decision in the championship game of the NSIC Baseball Tournament at Joe Faber Field on May 13.

The Huskies enter the match-up after battling back in the loser's bracket after falling the Minnesota State on May 12 by a 6-3 score. The Mavericks had three tournament wins to advance to the championship game.

Minnesota State would be the first team on the board when Hunter Walsh scored after a tournament MVP Luke Waldek split a single shot up the center. The Huskies would notch their own run when Bo Schmitz ripped a single past the Maverick's shortstop to bring in Judd Davis and tie the game at 1-1.

The Mavericks would score the next three runs with one coming in the fifth inning when a fly-out to center brought in one runner. A pair of doubles in the seventh would add two more runs to advance the Maverick's lead to 4-1.

Ethan Ibarra would add another run for the Huskies when he sent a bomb into center left to bring in Jackson Goplen from second base and cut the lead to 4-2. The lead would remain there as the Maverick's relief pitcher Ricky Digrugilliers would shut down all offense opportunities for the Huskies.

Minnesota State outhit the Huskies 10-4 in the contest, and committed the lone error of the game. Shannon Ahern drew the loss for the Huskies despite a stellar showing in the first 6.1 innings of the game. Minnesota State's Belzer earns the win and Digrugilliers draws his first save of the season.

Both teams were well represented on the All-Tournament Team, accounting for eight of the 11 spots. Minnesota State's short stop Luke Waldek drew the honor of being named Tournament MVP.

The Huskies and Mavericks now await the NCAA DII Regional announcment on May 19 for seedings and information for next week's beginning of the NCAA DII Baseball Tournament.
