Huskies Roll to 2-0 Start in Saturday’s Season Opener

St. Joseph, MO – #21 St. Cloud State (2-0, 0-0 NSIC) opened the 2018 season on the road with two victories over NCAA Central Region opponent, Missouri Western State (4-5, 0-0 MIAA) on Saturday, Jan. 17.
GAME ONE RECAP (SCSU: 17 | MWSU: 2)
After jumping out to a 10-0 lead after three innings of play, the Huskies unleased a fury of runs in the first game of Saturday's twin-bill. Senior, Jackson Goplen was one homerun shy of hitting for the cycle in his four-hit, seven RBI day at the plate. Juniors, Mitch Mallek and Mat Meyer each recorded two RBi's as well. Junior, Dominic Austing was the winning pitcher of record after only allowing one hit, one run and striking out three batters in five innings of work.
Freshman, Reid Conlee made his first start as the designated hitter for St. Cloud State. Conlee was 1-1 with one RBI while also walking three times. Ethan Ibarra also drew three walks and scored three times.
GAME TWO RECAP (SCSU: 4 | MWSU: 3)
A Caeden Harris RBI triple in the fifth inning and seventh innings gave the Huskies a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh after trailing by two runs through the fourth inning. An unearned run allowed the Griffons to tie the ballgame, until Mathew Meyer scored on a bases-loaded walk that was drawn by sophomore, Aaron Hammann in the eighth inning.
Freshman, Matthew Osterberg received the win in his collegiate debut after tossing 4.2 innings in relief of Kyle Boser (4.1 IP, 5 K's, 2 ER) and striking out five in the game. Zach Walz also made his

Aaron Hammann is the expected game three starter for the Huskies on Sunday. SCSU is expected to keep the same starting line-up and batting order for the series finale. As a team, St. Cloud State scored 21 runs with 25 hits while also drawing 15 walks on the day. SCSU pitchers struck out 14 batters in a total of 16 innings of work while only allowing four earned runs and nine walks between the two games.
