Bo Schmitz had 6 RBI's on 6 hits in two games on Wednesday
Crookston, MINN. - After not playing a game in a full week, the St. Cloud State baseball team (21-10, 14-5 NSIC) recorded a series sweep over Minnesota Crookston (16-21, 2-16 NSIC) for the fourth time during the 2018 campaign. The Huskies held off a late surge from the Golden Eagles in game one, winning 5-1 and rolling to a 12-4 victory in game two. Both games were played at the UMC Baseball Field in Crookston, Minn. on April 18th.
GAME ONE SUMMARY (SCSUÂ 5 | UMC 1)
Husky ace, Dominic Austing put SCSU in a quality spot to win a ballgame by tossing five scoreless innings and striking out eight. The junior walked none and only allowed four hits.Â
Following Mat Meyer's RBI single to give SCSU a 1-0 lead in the first, a three-run homerun from senior captain, Jackson Goplen gave the Huskies a 4-0 lead as well as the momentum for the duration of the game. St. Cloud State would tack on one more in the fourth after a solo shot from Bo Schmitz. SCSU would hold their 5-0 lead through five innings, until Crookston scratched one across in the sixth. At one point, UMC had the bases loaded with no outs and looked to be threatening late in the game. Kyle Boser would enter the game out of the bullpen with the bases loaded and no outs to get the Huskies out of the jam, only allowing one run and recording two strikeouts.Â
GAME TWO SUMMARY (SCSUÂ 12 | UMC 4)
Bo Schmitz and Shannon Ahern were the headlining acts for the Huskies in game two. Schmitz would pick up five more hits and five RBI's in game two for SCSU. The junior recorded homeruns in back-to-back games and logged four singles as well. Shannon Ahern had a stellar seven inning start, where he struck out seven, walked none and only allowed three earned runs on five hits.Â
Senior, Jackson Goplen was 2-5 with a double and two RBI's while Mitch Mallek, Mathew Meyer, Aaron Hammann and Caeden Harris each recorded one RBI.
SCSU would get out to a four run lead once again, this time scoring one in the first and three in the second. The Huskies would hold a 4-0 lead until Crookston scratched across one in the top of the fourth.Â
Following Crookston's run in the fourth, SCSUÂ would score in each of the next four innings they had plate appearances in. The highlight of their scoring stretch from the fifth through the eighth was a four-run sixth inning that consisted of Goplen's 2 RBI double and a RBI single from Schmitz.Â
