BISMARCK, N.D. –After jumping out to an early 2-0 advantage going into set three, the St. Cloud State volleyball team (9-2, 5-0 NSIC) looked to be controlling all of the momentum in Saturday's match against Minot State. The Huskies were tripped up in set three, falling 25-17 after a dominant 25-11 set two victory and a 25-18 win to kick the match off. However, Chad Braegelmann's team was able to overcome an early three point deficit in set four and finish the match on a 7-3 run to win, 25-20. Included in the Huskies' fifth straight victory was another breakout performance from freshman, Linsey Rachel who posted 19 kills, 13 digs and a .395 hitting percentage.
An 8-1 run in set one gave SCSU an early 10-6 lead before eventually allowing Minot to come within one point down the stretch. Leading 19-18, the Huskies poured six unanswered points on the Beavers and took set one, 25-18.
St. Cloud State jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in set two courtesy of two kills from Marah Mulso and one each from Linsey Rachel and Abby Templin. The Huskies continued to control the flow of the match and extended their lead 19-7 late in the set. Another 8-1 run gave SCSU a 22-8 lead before the Beavers rallied back to put three points together. SCSU would take a 2-0 lead into the third set after the 25-11 set two victory.
Minot held their own in set three and received big kills from Shelby Spuller down the stretch to eliminate any late momentum the Huskies could try and hold onto. Minot took set three, 25-17. SCSU was previously on an eight set win streak over their last three games. Included in the streak was a sweep over #6 Minnesota Duluth and NSIC rival, U-Mary.
SCSU found themselves down early in set four, but eventually capitalized on errors and received big kills from Linsey Rachel and Krista Kuglin to tie the game at 10. Minot would then continue to take a one point lead before allowing SCSU to tie it up until a Minot service error would give the Huskies their first lead in set four. Going up 16-15, the Huskies did not look back and scored six unanswered points to take a 24-17 lead. Minot would take advantage of two SCSU errors and record a kill to bring the match within five, but an Abby Templin spike finished the Beavers 25-20 to give the Huskies their fifth consecutive win.
Following up with another career performance, Linsey Rachel charted 19 kills and 13 digs while also recording one service ace. Krista Kuglin and Abby Templin each had ten kills as well while Clara Krenz contributed 13 digs.
Of note, Taylor Olstad tallied 11 digs and two aces.
