Saturday’s win marks the first time St. Cloud State has defeated Augustana since 2009.
For the first time all season, the St. Cloud State Volleyball team (10-5, 6-3 NSIC) was on a losing streak. The skid started last weekend against #1 Northern State, continued with MSU Moorhead and (RV) Wayne State.
On Saturday, the Huskies displayed one of their most dominant performances of the season against conference foe Augustana. St. Cloud State swept the Vikings (25-12, 25-15, 25-17) and picked up their first win against Augie for the first time since 2009. The Huskies are 18-47 since 1982 in matches against the Vikings.
In a contest that St. Cloud State controlled from the start, Linsey Rachel posted a double-double with 18 kills and 12 digs. Abby Templin also contributed 12 kills (one shy of career high) while Clara Krenz posted a game-high of 21 digs. Maddy Torve charted 34 assists and 14 digs with Taylor Olstad adding 10 digs as well.
In set one, SCSU jumped out to a 5-2 lead courtesy of three errors, a kill from Rachel Houle and an ace from Clara Krenz. The Huskies would then go on a 5-1 run to go up 10-4 before it became a back and forth set with SCSU only allowing Augie to come within five points. A 9-2 run was the dagger of the set to put SCSU up 21-9. After two kills from Linsey Rachel, one from Abby Templin and one from Rachel Houle, SCSU would take set one 25-12.
Augustana would record the first point of set two for their only lead of the day against SCSU. After that, St. Cloud State slammed the door on any chances the Vikings may have had after going on a 9-1 run, then eventually leading 16-5. Augie put together a late rally to bring the set score within ten, but SCSU would go up 2-0 after a 25-15 win. Linsey Rachel recorded five kills and two digs while Abby Templin had four kills in set two.
St. Cloud State used another early lead to their advantage in the final set of the weekend. Going up 6-1, the Huskies were able to build on early momentum to extend their lead to 20-12. Augustana would rally back with a 5-2 run to decrease their deficit to six, but SCSU would receive a match point block from Abby Templin and Marah Mulso to complete the sweep with a 25-17 win.
Huskies volleyball is back in action next weekend when the ladies will travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. to take on the USF Cougars on Friday, then on Saturday in Marshall, Minn. when SCSU matches up against #12 Southwest Minn. St.
