ST. CLOUD, MINN. – Quite a bit of history was made in the St. Cloud State University athletic department in the month of January, specifically for the men's and women's basketball teams. Both teams were extremely success during those 31 days, as they both moved their way up the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) rankings with big wins over conference opponents. Key to their success were Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) and Gage Davis (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Bolingbrook), who were named the Wolters Kluwer January Athletes of the Month.
Wortz was outstanding for St. Cloud State women's basketball team throughout the month of January, as she scored in double-digits in seven of the team's eight games and guided the Huskies to a 5-3 record during the month. In eight games, Wortz averaged an impressive 17.5 points, 3.25 rebounds and 2.25 assists per game with five steals and three blocks to round out her month. The sophomore scored in double-digits in six of St. Cloud State's eight games, including two 20+ point performances, while shooting .470 from the floor and an impressive .560 from beyond the arc.
Wortz made history in January as well, as she became just the third Husky in program history to score 40+ points in a single game. In St. Cloud State's 74-56 win over Bemidji State on Saturday, January 5, the sophomore scored a career-high 40 points on 16-23 shooting, including a 5-8 mark from three point range and a 3-3 clip form the charity stripe, and accounting for 54 percent of the Huskies offense. That single performance ranks third all-time in program history in single game scoring, as Wortz is just the third player in program history to score at least 40 points in a single game.
Davis had an equally impressive month in January as he, like Wortz, scored quite a few points while breaking several records along the way. In eight games, Davis averaged 25.8 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.8 steals and .9 blocks per game and scored at least 20 points in six of St. Cloud State's eight January games. The senior set career-highs in points and steals during the month and led the team in scoring in all but two games in January.
Of course, Davis made quite a bit of history in the month of January, as he became the programs all-time leading scorer during the month. With his 32-point performance against Minot State on January 11, Davis surpassed former Husky standout Dan Hagen as the programs all-time leading scorer with 2137 points in his Husky career. Additionally, Davis became the NSIC's all-time leading scorer thanks to his career-high 42 points against Bemidji State on January 5.
