#14 St. Cloud State Picks Up Weekend Series in Joplin, Missouri

SCSU will face Wisconsin Parkside on Sunday and Monday, then close the trip against Missouri S&T
JOPLIN, MO - The #14 St. Cloud State baseball team (3-0, 0-0 NSIC) returns to action after starting the 2019 campaign with a 3-0 mark at the Houston Winter Invitational. Following the weekend set at Minute Maid Park, the Huskies' weekend set in St. Joseph, MO against Missouri Western State was canceled due to inclement weather conditions. Of note, the Huskies earned a #14 national rank in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association's (NCBWA) first national poll of the season. Also of note, Dominic Austing picked up NSIC Pitcher of the Week honors after a 5.2 inning effort that featured 11 strikeouts, no earned runs and three hits against then-No.6 Texas A&M Kingsville to open the season.
SCSU resumes play on Sunday, February 24th at 4:30 PM CT against the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers at Warren Turner Field in Joplin, Missouri. The Huskies and Rangers will face off once again on Monday, February 25th at 11 AM, then close the trip against Missouri S&T at 5 PM on Monday afternoon.Â

SERIES HISTORY | SCSU vs. PARKSIDE
St. Cloud State and Wisconsin Parkside last met in a double-header at U.S. Bank on Feb. 28, 2018 where SCSU went 2-0 in dramatic fashion. In game one against the Rangers, the Huskies fell behind 8-5 in the eighth inning of a seven-inning bout, then walked off UWP courtesy of a 3 RBI triple from Caeden Harris after Mitch Mallek singled Ethan Ibarra to cut the Huskies' deficit to two. In game two, current senior Kyle Boser shined with a complete game, four-hit shutout. The Huskies won 1-0 where Mitch Mallek knocked in the game's sole run - a gap shot double to score Ethan Ibarra. Nicholas Rana gave a seven-inning complete game effort for the Rangers in the contest. The right-hander struck out three and only allowed one unearned run while scattering three hits and walking none.  Of note, SCSU leads the all-time series 12-0 against the Rangers.Â
SCOUTING THE RANGERS
Wisconsin Parkside has started the 2019 season 0-3 after falling to the University of Indianapolis on the road. In 2018, the Rangers were 6-31 and 5-19 during conference play. Head Coach Daniel Espinosa is returning six of his top arms, including Nicholas Rana who recorded four of the Rangers' six wins in 2018. Rana posted a 3.96 ERA and tossed five complete games last season.Â

St. Cloud State and Missouri S&T last met in 2014, defeating the Miners 15-5. SCSU leads the all-time series 6-0 after the series started in 2013. The Miners made a deep run in the 2016 Midwest Regional, falling in the championship game. Since 2016, the Miners have compiled a 54-51 record. In 2018, Missouri S&T finished 26-26 with notable victories over Central Missouri, Grand Valley State and Illinois Springfield. Luke Marcheschi and Dalton Erger return to the Miners' pitching rotation after each notching four victories in 2018. All-GLVC returners for Missouri S&T include center fielder Kaleb Reid and Matt Gruse, a third baseman. Gruse posted a .348 batting average while also homering three times last season.Â

The Miners are off to a 2-2 start in 2019 after splitting with Spring Hill in Mobile, Alabama. Marcheschi and Erger have been the pitchers of record in both of the Miners' two victories to start the season, while Marcheski's win was a seven-inning complete game effort that featured two strikeouts with only one earned run. At the dish, Gruse is hitting .400 with two RBI's and two doubles through four games while Reid has posted three RBI's on four hits with a .364 average.Â
