SCSU's seven game winning streak was snapped by the Golden Bears on Sunday morning in Tucson.
TUCSON, Ariz. - In their final game of the Tucson Invitational Games, the #11 St. Cloud State baseball team (12-2, 0-0 NSIC) fell 4-1 in a rematch to Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday, March 10th. The Huskies close their annual trip to Tucson with a 7-1 record, with notable wins over NSIC opponents CSP, Southwest Minnesota State and Minot State. SCSU also defeated three NAIA opponents, Concordia (Neb.), St. Benedictine at Mesa and Morningside College. SCSU's contests against NSIC opponents are non-conference games, but do count toward regional rankings and records.
After overcoming a 4-0 deficit to defeat CSP 15-6 earlier in the week, the Huskies found themselves in another four-run hole on Sunday, but could not bounce back. The Golden Bears were able to use a four-run third inning and a lights out effort from Josh Gaworski on the bump to snap SCSU's seven-game win streak. Cal Giese was the pitcher of record for SCSU, tossing 2 1/3 innings while only allowing three earned runs and striking out one.
Blake Flint went the distance out of SCSU's bullpen, going 5 2/3 innings and only allowing one runner to reach base. Flint did not allow a run or a walk, struck out one and allowed one hit. Of note, Sunday's start for Giese was his first in 660 days. His last start came against Missouri Western State in the first round of the 2017 NCAA DII Central Region Tournament, a game the Huskies would win 12-0.Â
Both SCSU and CSP would record seven hits in the ball game, but the Huskies would strand seven runners, compared to the Golden Bears' four. Gaworski struck out four SCSU batters and walked two while only allowing two walks in his eight innings of work. Of note, Gaworski made his collegiate debut in the Tucson Invitational Games against SCSU last season, going 4 2/3 innings and picking up the win after only allowing one run on two hits and striking out five.Â
Mitch Mallek recorded three of the Huskies' seven hits while bringing home SCSU's only RBI of the game.Â
The Huskies are slotted to open their NSIC season against Minnesota State Mankato on Saturday, March 16th at 1:30 PM CT, with game two of the day scheduled to start at 3:30 PM CT. SCSU and Mankato will square off once more at 12 noon on Sunday, March 17th.
