Friday's loss marks the second time SCSU has lost to UMC in program history.
CROOKSTON, Minn. - A seven game winning streak came to an end for the #5 St. Cloud State baseball team against the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles on Friday afternoon in game one of the series. SCSU falls to 29-7 overall and 17-5 in the always rugged NSIC.Â
The Huskies were able to jump out to an early 3-0 lead courtesy of a 2 RBI single from Ethan Ibarra in the second, then crafty baserunning from Najee Gaskins and Mathew Meyer would give SCSU their third run in the third. Minnesota Crookston responded with a three-run sixth inning to tie the game, then a two-run go-ahead homer from Reed Hjelle gave the Golden Eagles a 5-3 advantage in the seventh.Â
Cal Giese gave the Huskies a strong start, going 5 1/3 and striking out eight while holding the Golden Eagles scoreless through five. Shannon Ahern provided the Huskies with 2 2/3 relief innings and struck out three.Â
SCSU's late rally was sparked by a double off of the left field fence from Jordan Joseph, then Matt Quade ripped a liner to left to put runners on the corners with no outs. Both Joseph and Quade would be stranded in the top of the ninth.Â
The Huskies and Golden Eagles will play a double headers starting at 12 noon on Saturday, April 20 in Crookston, MN.
