The Huskies defeated CSP 5-2 in both games on Tuesday, April 9
ST. CLOUD, Minn. - After being idle over the weekend, the #9 St. Cloud State baseball team (24-6, 12-4 NSIC) recorded two conference wins in the always rugged NSIC after sweeping the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears on Tuesday, April 9 at Joe Faber Field.Â
Blake Flint and Dominic Austing each collected their fourth win of the season after delivering two sterling starts against the Golden Bears on Tuesday afternoon. Arizona natives Najee Gaskins and Lenny Walker combined for six RBI's on the day while SCSU defeated CSP 5-2 in both games.Â
Of note, Blake Flint took a perfect game bid into the sixth inning against CSP in game one. Flint only allowed one baserunner and struck out five over six innings of work.Â
GAME 1, #9 SCSU 5 | CSP 2
The Huskies struck first in game one, taking a 3-0 lead in the second after Dylan Haskamp drew a walk with the bases loaded, then Najee Gaskins ripped a 2 RBI double to right that scored Caeden Harris and Toran Shahidi. Building on their early lead, SCSUÂ added one in both the third and fourth innings to take a 5-0 lead into the seventh, before holding off a late CSP rally in the seventh where the Golden Bears would scratch across two runs. Gaskins recorded 3 RBI's on two hits while SCSUÂ out-hit CSP 5-3 in the ballgame. The Huskies drew six walks and also stranded six baserunners, while CSP stranded one baserunner and only drew one walk.Â
GAME 2, #9 SCSU 5 | CSP 2
The Huskies' offense was able to get into CSP's bullpen by the third inning once again, jumping out to a 4-0 lead courtesy of a SF from Matt Quade, then a bases clearing bloop single from Lenny Walker in the second inning. CSP and SCSU would trade punches in the third, each scoring one then the Golden Bears added one more on a single in the fourth to make it a 5-2 ballgame in the fourth. From there, neither team would strike again due to strong bullpen work down the stretch.Â
Dominic Austing picked up nine strikeouts in his six inning effort, only allowing two earned runs on four hits while walking one. Sheldon Miks contributed 2 1/3 frames in relief, striking out three and only allowing one baserunner. Matt Butler recorded his fourth save of the year. Butler now ranks 10th all-time in program history for saves.Â
Of note, Austing is now only 15 strikeouts shy for the most in program history. The senior currently ranks second with 260 and trails only Logan Birr's 274.Â
St. Cloud State will return to action this weekend against the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. The series is slotted for Apr. 13-14 at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. Updates may be found on scsuhuskies.com as well as on Twitter and Facebook.
