SIOUX FALLS, S. D. – The St. Cloud State University men's basketball team saw its 2019-20 season come to an end Wednesday evening in the opening round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) / Sanford Health Tournament. Despite a valiant effort by the Huskies, the Vikings proved to be too much in the end, as Augstuana defeated St. Cloud State 75-67 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
The Huskies put up a fight in both the first and second halves, as they led the Vikings 37-35 after the initial 20 minutes of play. Anthony Roberts (Chicago, Ill. / Oak Park) and Trevon Marshall (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) led the way scoring wise for St. Cloud State, as the Illinois natives tallied 12 and 10 points in the first half respectively.
St. Cloud State's offense went cold early in the second half as Augustana regained the lead and jumped ahead 49-43 with 16:14 left in regulation. Still, the Huskies battled and eventually took a 53-52 lead midway through the half. Sadly, St. Cloud State ran out of gas in the closing minutes, as a late run gave the Vikings a 70-63 advantage over the Huskies with one minute remaining in regulation.
Still, St. Cloud State stayed within striking distance, as free throws by Oliver Ehrnvall (Uppsala, Sweden / Manhattan) cut the lead to 70-65 with 1:03 left on the clock. The Huskies then needed to foul on the next defensive possession, forcing first year Tyler Marsh (Nelson, New Zealand / Waimea) to foul and send Matt Todd to the line. Todd missed his first free throw, allowing Ilya Tyrtyshnik (Kyiv, Ukraine / Kyiv Specialized School #49) to come up with a huge rebound to give St. Cloud State possession. Roberts then hit a key layup under the basket, getting the Huskies within three at 70-67 with 47 seconds remaining in regulation.
The late surge, though, was not enough for St. Cloud State, as the team was forced to resort to shooting quick threes and fouling in an attempt to catch up in the closing seconds. The Vikings sealed their victory by draining four free throws, cementing the Huskies fate and dealing them a 75-67 loss.
Roberts ended the game as the team's leading scorer, tallying a game-leading 24 points to go along with eight rebounds and three assists. Marshall concluded his St. Cloud State career with 18 points, eight assists and three steals, while fellow seniors Jake Mussman (St. Cloud, Minn. / St. Cloud Tech) and Ehrnvall each scored seven points.
With the loss, the Huskies conclude the 2019-20 season with an overall record of 14-15 and a 11-11 mark in NSIC play. St. Cloud State has plenty to be proud of this season, as several student-athletes set career-highs and Marshall scored his 1000 career point, joining an elite and exclusive list of former Huskies.
