Shusterich & Quade provide extra inning punch to help SCSU win 11-8

The St. Cloud State University baseball team (7-2, 0-0 NSIC) opened its week of games in Florida with a thrilling 11-8 victory over Wilmington University in 10-innings on Thursday, March 5. The game was played at the Lake Myrtle Park baseball complex in Auburndale, Fla.
The game is part of the RussMatt Tournament, which the Huskies are particpating in this week in the Orlando, Fla. area. SCSU will continue its Spring Break schedule on Friday, March 6 with games against Ashland (12:30 p.m.) and Minnesota Crookston (4:00 p.m.) at Pat Thomas Field in Leesburg, Fla.
In the battle against Wilmington, the Huskies relied upon an offensive outburst in the 10th inning from Jake Shusterich and Matt Quade to break up the 7-7 deadlock.
In that decisive inning, Shusterich got the offense clicking with a two-run RBI double that scored teammates Lenny Walker and Drew Bulson. Quade then homered to bring home Shusterich to push SCSU's lead to 11-7.
Wilmington managed to get one more run back in the bottom of the 10th before Shannon Ahern finished the contest to gain his third win of the season with 6.2 innings of relief pitching that included six strikeouts and only five hits allowed. Fabian Villegas started the game for SCSU and Eli Emerson added 2.2 innings of relief work to set up Ahern.
In the first inning, SCSU scored five runs and led 5-2 at the end of the inning. Wilmington added runs in the third and fourth innings to narrow the gap to 5-4 before SCSU posted two more runs in the eighth inning to make it 7-4. The Wildcats forced the OT session with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the contest at 7-7.
In the game, Shusterich was impressive with three hits, four RBIs and two runs scored. Quade had two hits (including a home run), two RBIs and two runs for the Huskies in the game and Lenny Walker added a triple and two runs for the Huskies on offense. Aaron Hammann also posted two hits in the game for the Huskies, who were outhit by Wilmington 11-10 in the contest.Â
