
Swim and dive wins eight events in South Dakota dual

VERMILLION, S.D. - The St. Cloud State University women's swim and dive team put together a strong performance in its second official dual meet of 2021. In a match up with the Division I University of South Dakota, the Huskies won eight events but fell to the Coyotes 165-134.
St. Cloud State earned wins both on the diving board and in the pool, as the Huskies won the 1-meter diving competition, along with the 800 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 400 freestyle, 200 individual medley and the 200 freestyle relay. Senior diver Madison Brinkman (Grey Eagle, Minn. / Melrose) won the event for the second consecutive dual, scoring 294.25 points to finish in first. Meredith Matchinsky (St. Cloud, Minn. / Tech) additionally scored points for St. Cloud State on the 1-meter board, finishing in third place with 233.55 points.Â
Sophomore Andrea Rodriguez (Ankeny, Iowa) won the 800 freestyle with an impressive time of 9:38.46, finishing the race nearly five seconds ahead of the second place swimmer from South Dakota. She additionally won the 400 meter freestyle behind a time of 4:45.01.Â
Teammate Kara Cowell (Neenah, Wis. / Neenah) found success in both the 100 and 200Â meter breaststroke races, winning both with times of 1:16.60 and 2:48.57 respectively. Sarah Moden (Parker, Colo. / Legend) took fourth in the 100 breaststroke, earning two points towards St. Cloud State's overall team score with a time of 1:19.45, while Whitney Hanson (Ladysmith, Wis. / Bruce) earned points with a second place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:49.20.
The Huskies saw two swimmers finish in the top-5 in the 50 meter freestyle, as Alaina Friske (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) won the event with a time of 28.06. Teammate Ashton Hobza (Albertville, Minn. / St. Michael-Albertville) finished third in the race with a time of 28.28.Â
St. Cloud State won the final two events of the day, taking gold in both the 200 IM and 200 freestyle relay. After finishing second in the 200 breaststroke, Hanson won the 200 IM behind a time of 2:30.65, while the relay team of Kasey Milstroh (Foley, Minn. / Foley), Friske, Hobza and Christina Ware (Ankey, Iowa / Centennial) won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:52.50.Â
Thanks to these and several other strong performances, the Huskies earned 134 points, though it wasn't enough to defeat the Division I Coyotes, who won the dual 165-134.Â
St. Cloud State will return to action on Thursday, January 21 when it hosts Minnesota State-Mankato in St. Cloud, Minnesota.Â
