ST. CLOUD, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University men's basketball team was firing on all cylinders Sunday afternoon. Literally. Offensively. Defensively. Everything was clicking for the Huskies as they improved to 3-3 on the year with a 3-1 mark in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play with a 90-74 win over Minot State University.Â
St. Cloud State shot .556 from the floor as a team in Sunday's win, including a season-high .435 clip from three-point range. Defensively, the team held Minot State to under 50-percent shooting for the second consecutive day while forcing 12 turnovers.
The Huskies were forced to play much of the first half without their top three scorers, as Anthony Roberts (Chicago, Ill. / Oak Park), Caleb Donaldson (Bloomington, Ill. / Bloomington) and Ilya Tyrtyshink (Kyiv, Ukraine / Kyiv Specialized School #49) all missed significant time due to fouls and/or injury. St. Cloud State improvised well, though, and found plenty of ways to score, as the Huskies held a 40-33 lead over the Beavers at the half.Â
In the end, St. Cloud State's offensive firepower was just too much for Minot State to overcome, as the team opened the half with a 7-0 scoring run, extending its lead to 50-33 a mere two minutes into the second half. That was all she wrote for the Beavers, though they tried to claw their way back in the later stages of the game. It was too little too late, as the Huskies won the game by a final score of 90-74.Â
Ryan Bagley (Pocatello, Idaho / Burley) was picture-perfect all weekend for St. Cloud State, as he finished with a career-high 21 points on 6-6 shooting, going 4-4 from beyond the arc and 5-5 from the charity stripe. He additionally added give rebounds, five assists and four steals in the loss.Â
Donaldson, Roberts, Matthew Willert (Buffalo, Minn. / Buffalo) and Josh Tomasi (Melbourne, Australia / Western Colorado) all scored in double-digits for the Huskies Sunday afternoon. Donaldson led the team in assists with six and scored 16 total points, while Willert impressed by scoring 16 as well on 6-10 shooting. Roberts tallied his second double-double of 2020-21 with 13 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds, while Tomasi added 10 points in the paint.Â
With the win, St. Cloud State's overall record improves to 3-3, and the team is 3-1 in NSIC North Division play. The Huskies will return to action on Friday, January 22 when they host No. 2 Northern State University at 6 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.Â
