Jenniina Nylund scored the game-winner with just under a minute to go in overtime to lead St. Cloud State women's hockey (5-12-1, 5-12-1 WCHA) past Bemidji State (2-15-2, 2-15-2 WCHA) by 3-2 final on Friday evening. Despite being outshot 33-21, the Huskies offense challenged the Beavers throughout the evening and created plenty of strong scoring chances.
Barely a minute into the game, defender Olivia Hanson knifed in with the puck to the right circle and rifled the puck past Bemidji State's goaltender to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Bookending the frame at just under a minute to go, BSU tied things up at one a piece. Shots were even at nine throughout the opening period.
The Beavers took their lone lead of the game with four minutes to play in the second period, bringing a 2-1 advantage into the third. SCSU drew a penalty eight seconds into the closing frame, going on their first full power play of the game. Senior forward Emma Bigham found the puck on her stick on a tie-up play up front and batted it past the tender to tie things at two at the 2:00 mark of the period with the final seconds ticking away on the advantage. The game remained tied through a hotly contested final 18 minutes of regulation, with the Huskies killing off a 2:00 minor midway through the period.
With under a minute to go in overtime, Nylund carried the puck into the offensive zone and ran a quick give-and-go with Klara Hymlarova, setting up a quick Nylund wrister that deflected off the Beavers netminder to give St. Cloud State the 3-2 win and the additional point in the WCHA standings.
Sanni Ahola earned the win in net, stopping 31 shots for a .939 save rate.
St. Cloud State led the faceoff battle 29-22, outblocked the Beavers 16-15 and killed off both BSU power plays. Nylund went 10-5 in the circle to lead SCSU. Hannah Bates tallied two assists, while Taylor Lind, Hymlarova and Nylund each added one.
The Huskies and Beavers wrap up their 2020-21 season on Saturday with a 1:07 p.m. CST puck drop. Fans can follow the action on FloHockey.
