St. Cloud State Baseball (2-3, 0-0 NSIC) capped off their 2021 season-opening trip to Fort Scott, Kansas with a dominant 15-3 victory over Bemidji State (1-4, 0-0 NSIC) on Wednesday night.
"It was great to finish the trip with a complete game with no errors, solid pitching and again the bats on fire!" said head coach Pat Dolan.
Shortstop Kyle Rodriguez (4-for-4, 3 R, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI) and right fielder Matt Quade (3-for-3, 2 R, 3B, HR, 3 RBI) each produced massive performances at the plate for SCSU.
"It's definitely not easy pitching or playing defense in 25-mile-an-hour winds but I really give the guys credit the last two days," Dolan said, "And even though we lost our first three games we had momentum in the ninth inning [against Minnesota-Crookston] coming back from six and four run deficits."
On the mound, Tommy Thompson played the role of opener as part of a staff day, earning his first collegiate win with 2.0 scoreless innings of two-hit ball, striking out five. Mack Larson 3.0 frames of one-run ball with three strikeouts, while Jacob Bradley struck out a pair to close out the final 2.0 innings.
"Pitching is the name of the game and the guys that threw tonight really made some adjustments from their first outings earlier in the week," said Dolan, "With all the pitchers we have out we need them to continue to improve."
The Huskies' lineup kicked things off in the home half of the second as Quade led off with a solo home run to deep left field. Lenny Walker (1-for-3, BB, R, 2B, SB) drew a free pass, stole second, then moved to third thanks to a throwing error on a ball put in play by Drew Bulson (0-for-2, R). Rodriguez tagged a double to right-center, scoring Walker and Bulson. A Tate Wallat (2-for-4, R, 3B, 3 RBI) groundout advanced Rodriguez to third, John Nett (1-for-3, 2 BB, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI) drew a walk, then Max Gamm (0-for-4, R, RBI) reached on an error that permitted Rodriguez to touch home. Paul Steffensen (2-for-3, R, RBI) and Jake Shusterich (1-for-4, R, RBI) smacked back-to-back RBI singles, then Quade finished off the eight-run frame with a blistering two-run triple to right-centerfield.
Rodriguez led off the third with a single fileted through the right side and promptly advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw. Wallat smoked a single back up the middle, plating Rodriguez.
SCSU kept things going in the fourth as Quade singled up the middle and Walker launched a double to put two in scoring position for Caleb Marquez (1-for-2, R, RBI). The Huskies' catcher ripped a single to right, bringing in Quade. Rodriguez and Wallat followed up with an RBI single and a run-scoring fielder's choice respectively, making it a 12-0 game.
"Offensively we were locked in all week scoring close to 70 runs with pretty much everyone contributing." Dolan commented.
The Huskies' scoring was wrapped up in the sixth as Rodriguez and Wallat rapped back-to-back triples before Nett belted a two-run home run off the scoreboard in left-center.
St. Cloud State begins NSIC play on March 20 on the road at Augustana, opening with a Saturday doubleheader at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. CST.
