St. Cloud State Baseball (2-4, 0-1 NSIC) ace Matt Osterberg was brilliant through 6.0 innings of work, but the Huskies' bats faltered with runners on in a 3-2 NSIC-opening loss at No. 18 Augustana (5-0, 1-0 NSIC).
Osterberg twirled 6.0 frames of five-hit, one-walk baseball while not allowing an earned run and striking out four batters. The lefthander battled past a pair of unearned runs, stymieing one of the top lineups in the Central Region, but took a no-decision as he exited with the game tied at two.
Throwing errors in the first and second innings allowed two Augustana runners to score, presenting the Huskies with a 2-0 deficit entering the top of the third. Kyle Rodriguez and Parker Savard led off the frame with a pair of singles, putting two on with none retired. Following a popout, Max Gamm singled to right, loading the bases for designated hitter Paul Steffensen. SCSU's three-hitter bounced a ground ball to short that was bobbled, allowing Rodriguez to score and each runner to advance safely. Jake Shusterich lifted a lazy fly ball to shallow right-center that was dropped by the right fielder, scoring Savard and tying the game at two.
Osterberg and the Augustana staff traded scoreless frames through the middle innings. The Vikings plated a run on a bases-loaded eighth-inning walk and then squashed a Huskies rally in the ninth to seal the 3-2 win.
SCSU hitters combined to go 4-for-17 with runners on base in the game one loss.
The Huskies and Augustana wrap up their conference-opening series on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at noon CST. Fans can watch live on the NSIC Network with Live Stats provided by Augustana.
