Junior lefthander Trevor Koenig struck out seven over 6.0 innings of five-hit, no-walk baseball, but the St. Cloud State (3-5, 1-2 NSIC) bats couldn't solve reigning NSIC Pitcher of the Year and No. 18 Augustana (6-1, 2-1 NSIC) ace Max Steffens in a 2-1 loss in Sunday's series finale.
"We definitely learned a lot about our team this weekend and really improved in a lot of areas," said head coach Pat Dolan, "That's obviously a very good team we played, but in a sense we gave them six of their seven runs they scored this weekend. These mistakes we need to clean up. We competed our tails off and that I am very proud of!"
Koenig recorded his first collegiate complete game with 6.0 innings of work in the seven-inning game two of Sunday's doubleheader, allowing just two earned runs.
The Huskies' lone tally came in the top of the fourth as Paul Steffensen (1-for-3, R) reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a Jake Shusterich (0-for-2, BB) walk, advanced to third on a C.J. Breen (0-for-3) fielder's choice and scored courtesy of a Matt Quade (1-for-3, RBI) infield single.
SCSU pitchers allowed just three earned runs over 24.0 innings in the series, posting a stellar 1.13 ERA against the No. 18 team in the country.
St. Cloud State is scheduled to travel to Wayne State this Wednesday in their first midweek series of the year, with the games scheduled for 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. CST.
