A two-out, two-run single off the bat of senior Matt Quade (3-for-4, 2 RBI) in the seventh was the difference as St. Cloud State Baseball (4-5, 2-2 NSIC) defeated Wayne State (3-4, 2-2 NSIC) by a 4-3 final in game one of Thursday's midweek series. The Huskies received 5.0 dazzling innings of relief from lefthander Jack Habeck, silencing the Wildcats' lineup and putting SCSU in position to come back from a 3-0 deficit through three.
Habeck was simply masterful in his 5.0 frames, allowing just two hits and striking out three while walking none to earn his second win of the season.
Down three in the top of the fourth with one out, Jake Shusterich (3-for-4, 2 R, 2 2B, RBI) singled to right for the first of his three knocks on the afternoon. Quade singled to left following a flyout, then Lenny Walker (0-for-3, BB) drew a walk to fill the bases. Tate Wallat (1-for-3, RBI) smoked a two-out single into center, plating Shusterich and trimming the deficit to two.
In the top of the fifth, Paul Steffensen (2-for-4, 2 R, SB) reached on an error with two gone in the inning and proceeded to steal second base. Shusterich roped a double to left on a 3-1 pitch, bringing home Steffensen to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
The Huskies left two on in the sixth and Habeck worked another scoreless frame during the home half, setting the stage for an exhilarating final inning. Steffensen legged out an infield single to third with one retired, then Shusterich blasted his second double of the game to put the Huskies' three-and-four hitters in scoring position. One out later, Quade drilled a single through the left side to score both runners and give SCSU a 4-3 lead. Habeck worked a one-two-three home half of the seventh to clinch the victory.
