Redshirt-senior captain Matt Quade (4-5, HBP, 4 R, 2 HR, 7 RBI) blasted a pair of long balls and drove in a career-best seven runs as part of a 21-3 St. Cloud State Baseball (1-3, 0-0 NSIC) victory over Bemidji State (1-2, 0-0 NSIC) on Tuesday afternoon. Junior C.J. Breen (2-4, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI) went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, while senior Lenny Walker (1-2, R, HR, 4 RBI) belted a grand slam off the bench in the win.
The lineup's explosive effort came in support of true freshman lefthander Luke Tupy, who earned the win in his collegiate debut after tossing 5.0 innings of one-run baseball, allowing just two hits and walking five while striking out six. Tupy is the first Huskies pitcher to win his debut appearance since Matt Osterberg did so in 2018 against Missouri Western State.
With the game scoreless entering the third, Paul Steffensen (1-1, 2 BB, HBP, R, 2B, 2 RBI) led off with a walk, then Tyler Schiller (1-4, 2 BB, 3 R) singled following the first out of the inning. Breen poked an RBI single into right-center to bring home Steffensen. Quade stepped into the box and promptly unloaded on a pitch, belting a three-run shot to left field. Two batters later, Parker Savard (2-4, HBP, 3 R, 2B) laced a double into the right field gap and scored on a John Nett (1-1, 2 BB, HBP, R, 2 RBI) single.
Leading 5-0 after three, Schiller began the fourth by drawing a walk. Breen followed up with a long homer to left, his first collegiate home run. Quade and Savard hit-by-pitches bookended Tate Wallat (1-5, 2 R) reaching on errors to load the bases. Nett and Max Gamm (1-2, 2 BB, R, 2B, RBI) drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks, then Steffensen drilled a two-run double to the left-center gap and Caleb Marquez (0-3, SF, RBI) lined a sacrifice fly into left to give the Huskies a 12-0 lead through four.
Quade opened the fifth with a sharp single off the Beavers' pitcher. Wallat dumped a single down the right field line, then Savard singled to right, loading the bases for a Walker pinch-hitting appearance. The Huskies senior clobbered a grand slam to dead center, the second grand slam of his career. Kyle Rodriguez (1-2, R) poked a pinch-hit single back up the middle, the Beavers recorded an out, then Ean Von Wald singled and Schiller reached on an error to reload the bases. Mason Diaz (0-1, HBP, RBI) pinch hit to make his collegiate debut and was struck by a pitch, bringing home the Huskies' fifth run of the frame. Quade followed up by smashing a towering grand slam to left, giving SCSU their final four runs and a 21-0 advantage.
Adam Winkels came on for Tupy in the sixth, closing out the game with 2.0 innings of work and not allowing an earned run while striking out one.
St. Cloud State and Bemidji State are scheduled to conclude their trips to Fort Scott on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. CST.
