St. Cloud State (8-9, 6-6 NSIC) ace Matt Osterberg struck out a career-high 11 batters over 6.2 frames but the Huskies' lineup left 11 men on base and went just 3-for-15 with runners on en route to a 4-2 loss at the hands of Sioux Falls (8-11, 4-11 NSIC) in Saturday's series opener.
Osterberg's breaking stuff overmatched the Cougars lineup, allowing the lefthander to pile up 17 whiffs on 108 pitches for a 15.7% swinging strike rate. His 11 strikeouts mark a new career-best, and the outing marks his third collegiate start with double-digit punchouts. The southpaw scattered four hits and walked just one. Of the three runs on his line, only one was earned.
Sioux Falls opened the scoring in the second, as the leadoff man reached on a bloop single to left, advanced 90 feet on a groundout and scored on a two-out single to center. The hit was the only one Osterberg would allow in seven chances with two outs during the game.
SCSU's starter retired nine straight batters from the third through the fifth until an error in the sixth inning went on to permit two unearned runs to score.
Down 3-0 entering the seventh, Tate Wallat (1-for-3, BB, 2 R, HR, RBI) drew a leadoff walk and scampered to second on a wild pitch. Pinch hitter Drew Bulson (1-for-1, RBI) rifled a two-strike single back up the middle, plating Wallat.
Replacing Osterberg after he was removed at 108 pitches in the seventh, righthander Eli Emerson provided 2.1 frames of excellent relief, allowing one unearned run on four hits, walking none and striking out two.
Trailing again by three following an unearned eighth-inning Cougars run, Wallat opened the Huskies' ninth by launching a long leadoff homer to right.
Max Gamm (2-for-4, SAC) was the lone Huskies hitter with a multi-hit afternoon.
St. Cloud State and Sioux Falls will conclude their series with a Sunday doubleheader beginning at noon CST. The doubleheader will be broadcast on the NSIC Network with Live Stats provided by SCSU.
