Huskies fall 5-4 to Minnesota-Duluth

A late-inning crooked number doomed St. Cloud State Baseball (10-10, 8-7 NSIC) in a 5-4 loss to Minnesota-Duluth (8-17, 5-14 NSIC) on Monday evening at Joe Faber Field. The Huskies led 4-2 through seven and a half, but a three-run Duluth eighth gave UMD a come-from-behind victory.
Trevor Koenig gave SCSU another incredible performance, working 7.1 innings of seven-hit, zero-walk baseball while allowing just three earned and striking out seven. The lefthander received a no-decision despite inducing a mind-blowing 20 swinging strikes on 101 pitches (19.8% whiff rate).
John Nett (1-for-3, 2 BB, 2 R, RBI, 3 SB) led off the game by drawing a walk, stealing second and third then scoring on a wild pitch with two away in the first.
Sparking another run-scoring frame, Nett drew a free pass to open the third. Max Gamm (2-for-4, SAC, SB) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move him to second, then Nett swiped third. Paul Steffensen (1-for-5, R, 2B, RBI) laced an RBI double down the left field line to plate Nett and promptly scampered to third on an errant pickoff attempt. Two batters later Matt Quade (2-for-3, BB, 2B) watched four balls go by to put runners on the corners, then took off for second on a designed rundown play. The Bulldogs' first baseman threw too low for the shortstop to handle, allowing Steffensen to cross home and give SCSU a 3-0 lead.
UMD scored a pair in the fifth, trimming the lead to one.
In the Huskies' sixth, Drew Bulson (1-for-3, BB, R) poked a one-out single to right. Following a flyout, Tate Wallat (0-for-1, BB) pinch hit and drew a walk, then Nett smacked a single to center, plating Bulson, although Wallat was thrown out at third to end the frame with SCSU leading 4-2.
Four wild pitches and a passed ball contributed to a three-run Bulldog eighth inning.
St. Cloud State returns to action on Wednesday, April 21 with a 1:30 pm midweek doubleheader at Joe Faber Field against Bemidji State. The series will be broadcast on the NSIC Network with Live Stats provided by SCSU.
