St. Cloud State Baseball (6-6, 4-3 NSIC) fell 7-5 in their home opener to No. 19 Minnesota State-Mankato (13-1, 11-0 NSIC) in game one of Friday's series-opening doubleheader. The Huskies outhit the Mavericks 10-9 and came back from a 4-0 deficit after four and a half, but a sixth-inning MSU rally did them in as the lineup faltered against their opponent's pen.
Huskies ace Matt Osterberg struck out a season-high 10 batters over 5.2 innings of work, going to war with the deep Minnesota State lineup. The southpaw surrendered five earned on seven hits and four walks to take the loss, although the final two runs on his line crossed home as inherited runners allowed to score by the SCSU bullpen. Osterberg went toe-to-toe against MSU ace Jon Ludwig, whom the Huskies tagged for five earned on nine hits in just five innings of work.
All of St. Cloud State's runs came in the fifth. Down 4-0 to begin the frame, Matt Quade (1-for-3, R, HR, RBI) led off with a solo blast to left followed by a Lenny Walker (2-for-3, R, 2B) single to right. Tate Wallat (1-for-2, R, HR, 2 RBI, SH) promptly belted an opposite-field two-run home run, trimming the deficit to one. Two batters later, John Nett (1-for-4, R) legged out an infield single and went first-to-third on a Max Gamm (1-for-4, R, SB) single. Gamm stole second, then Paul Steffensen (2-for-4, ROE) reached on an error to fill the bases. Ludwig struck out the next batter, bringing Caleb Marquez (2-for-3, 2 RBI) to the plate with two men out. The Huskies' catcher rapped a two-run single to center, giving SCSU a 5-4 lead.
Minnesota State scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh, closing out the Huskies 7-5.
Nett's fifth-inning single bumped his hitting streak to a team-high 14 games.
