Freshman lefthander Jack Habeck twirled a 9.0-inning complete-game masterpiece as St. Cloud State Baseball (15-10, 13-7 NSIC) swept away No. 24 Minnesota-Crookston (17-6, 12-6 NSIC) with a 7-3 victory in Sunday's series finale.
Habeck scattered 10 hits and three walks over his 9.0 innings of work, allowing three earned while striking out a career-high nine batters to earn his sixth win of 2021. The second-year freshman responded well after a three-run first, firing eight straight scoreless frames to close out his performance. He worked at a 67.9% strike rate, throwing 89 strikes on 131 pitches with 11 whiffs.
Trailing 3-0 after the visiting half of the first, John Nett (2-for-3, 3 BB, 3 R, 2B, SB) led off with a walk, moved to second on a passed ball and scampered to third on a wild pitch. Tate Wallat (0-for-5, BB, 2 R, RBI, SB) brought him home with an RBI groundout to short, trimming the deficit to two.
Matt Quade (2-for-2, 3 BB, R, 2B, RBI) opened the second (and his birthday) by roping a double to left-center and trotted to third on a wild pitch. Two outs later, Drew Bulson (1-for-3, 2 BB, 2 RBI) lined a single to left, plating Quade and presenting SCSU with a one-run deficit.
The game remained locked at 3-2 UMC through five-and-a-half complete. Nett began the sixth with a double to left, then Paul Steffensen (1-for-6) blooped a single to right, keeping Nett at second as the rightfielder made a play on the ball. Wallat grounded a fielder's choice to short, putting men on the corners for Jake Shusterich (1-for-3, 2 HBP, R, RBI). The Huskies' first baseman continued a tremendous series by tying the game with a single bounded through the hole on the left side. A passed ball advanced Bulson and Shusterich 90 feet. Quade watched ball four miss outside and ricochet off the catcher's glove, scoring Wallat and giving SCSU a 4-3 lead. Tyler Schiller (0-for-3, 2 BB) walked to load the bases, and two batters later Bulson drew a four-pitch walk to bring in Shusterich.
St. Cloud State added two more in the seventh as Quade drew a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch on the ensuing at-bat gave the Huskies their decisive 7-3 advantage.
The Huskies begin a seven-game road trip with a two-game midweek series at Minot State on Wednesday, April 28 beginning at 1:30 p.m. CST at Corbett Field.
