Huskies Baseball splits at Minot State in thrilling midweek tilt

St. Cloud State Baseball (16-11, 14-8 NSIC) began a critical seven-game road swing by splitting a midweek series with Minot State (18-13, 16-10 NSIC) on Wednesday. With the split, the Huskies remain in fourth place in the NSIC standings with just two weekends and a midweek left to play.
"We knew going into the day it was going to be a battle," said head coach Pat Dolan, "As Coach Eul really has his kids play hard. We faced one of their top pitchers in game one and came back after an early deficit. We couldn't quite hold the lead and unfortunately lost another one run game. But it was nice to see the guys turn the page and jump out to a 6-0 lead and win game two!"
Game One: Beavers 7, Huskies 6 (F/8)
An exhilarating series began with Minot State taking the lead with a three-run first in the opener. Following the rocky opening frame, Huskies starter Tommy Thompson found his groove and delivered 5.0 innings of three-run ball by scattering four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
SCSU began their comeback effort in the third as Max Gamm (2-for-4, 2 R, 3B) led off with a blistering triple. Two batters later, Kyle Rodriguez (1-for-4, R, 2 RBI, SB) supplied a run-scoring groundout to plate Gamm. John Nett (1-for-3, BB, R, RBI) followed with a two-out walk, then Paul Steffensen (1-for-3, HBP, 2B, RBI) brought him home with an RBI double, trimming the deficit to 3-2.
Jake Shusterich (1-for-3, HBP, R) singled to open the fourth, putting the tying run on base. Matt Quade (1-for-4, R, HR, 2 RBI) promptly blasted a monstrous go-ahead two-run home run to deep left. After a groundout, Gamm reached on an error then drew a wild pickoff throw to advance to second. A strikeout brought up Rodriguez with two outs, and the Huskies second baseman delivered with an RBI single. Rodriguez swiped second and scored courtesy of a Nett base knock, giving SCSU a 6-3 lead through three and a half.
A three-run Minot State sixth drew the game even before the Beavers walked it off in the eighth inning.
Game Two: Huskies 7, Beavers 3
The Huskies jumped out to a quick lead in game two of the series, as Nett (2-for-3, 2 BB, 2 R, RBI, SB) led off with a single, moved to second on a Gamm (1-for-5, RBI) groundout and swiped third before crossing the plate on a Steffensen (2-for-5, R, 2 2B, 2 RBI) double. The Huskies' leftfielder stole third base then scored on a Shusterich (0-for-3, BB, RBI) groundout, opening up a 2-0 lead after one.
Lenny Walker (1-for-2, 2 BB, R, SB) began the second with a single but was cut down on a Tate Wallat (1-for-4, 2 R, SB) fielder's choice, leaving the latter on first with one away. Drew Bulson (2-for-3, BB) and Rodriguez (2-for-4, R, 2 RBI, SB) smacked back-to-back singles, loading the bases for Nett. SCSU's centerfielder brought Wallat in with an RBI groundout, making it a 3-0 game.
Still leading by three in the fourth, Wallat singled with one retired. Following a popout, he scampered to second on a wild pitch then scored on a Rodriguez single. Nett welcomed the Beavers' first reliever with a single, continuing a string of four straight hits. Gamm singled home Rodriguez, then Steffensen doubled in Nett to give the Huskies a 6-0 advantage.
SCSU added one more in the fifth as Walker drew a one-out walk and Wallat reached on an error before the pair executed a double-steal. Bulson watched ball four go by to load the bases for Rodriguez, who bounced into an RBI fielder's choice.
Mack Larson received the start for the Huskies after pitching in the midweek's first game, going 3.2 innings and allowing just two earned on four hits and a walk while striking out three. Fabian Villegas earned the win in relief by covering 3.1 shutout frames of one-hit, one-walk baseball with three punchouts.
