Stranded runners plague Huskies in Second Round loss to No. 18 Augustana

St. Cloud State Baseball (22-13, 18-9 NSIC) left 15 baserunners aboard and went 4-for-19 (.211) with runners on as they fell 8-2 to No. 18 Augustana (34-9, 29-9 NSIC) in their first game of the NSIC Championships Second Round.
"The scoreboard did say 8-2 at the end," said head coach Pat Dolan, "But the name of the game was their clutch hitting and us just not getting those clutch hits with runners in scoring position in the first five innings. You obviously got to give credit to Augie's starters and relievers. I feel bad for Matt as he gave us another gutty performance and we'll need to see vintage Trevor in game one tomorrow."
Huskies ace Matt Osterberg gutted through 5.1 frames, allowing six runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out eight.
The game played as a typical heavyweight fight between the Huskies and Vikings, remaining scoreless until a two-strike, two-run Augustana triple in the bottom of the fifth. Four more scored in the sixth for the Vikings, then Paul Steffensen blasted a solo home run to right in the seventh, cutting the deficit to 6-1.
Augustana tacked on two more in the seventh. Tate Wallat led off the eighth with a single, followed by a Parker Savard single two batters later. John Nett filled the bases by legging out an infield single, then Max Gamm plated Wallat.
Nick Brauns closed things out for SCSU, covering 2.2 innings of four-hit, zero walk baseball while striking out two and not allowing a single earned run.
The Huskies take on Minnesota-Crookston in an elimination game on Thursday, May 20 at Karras Park with a noon CST first pitch. The game will be broadcast on 97.5 FM RadioX and the NSIC Network with Live Stats provided by the NSIC.
