St. Cloud State Baseball (19-11, 17-8 NSIC) concludes their 2021 road regular-season schedule with a two-game midweek set at the University of Mary (17-17, 14-13 NSIC) on Wednesday, May 5. The doubleheader will begin at 1:30 p.m. CST at the Bismarck Municipal Ballpark.
The Huskies and Marauders have met 22 times since the all-time series began in 2008. SCSU has gone 22-0 against U-Mary, their highest winning percentage against any program they have played more than 10 times. In their last meeting back in 2019, St. Cloud State earned a home midweek sweep with 1-0 and 4-0 finals. Dominic Austing and Matt Osterberg combined for 13.0 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and five walks while striking out 14.
Scouting the Huskies
Entering the final week of the regular season, SCSU stands in fourth place in the NSIC standings with a 1.5 game lead on Minot State with the most likely playoff scenario being the Huskies facing either Minot State or Winona State in a three-game series next week. The Huskies own a whopping plus-104 run differential and are performing as a Pythagorean Theorem expected win-loss record of 23-7. Fresh off a weekend sweep at Northern State, St. Cloud State has won nine of their last 10 and have scored at least six runs in every game during that span.
Setting the table for St. Cloud State's loaded lineup is centerfielder John Nett, presently slashing .400/.532/.629 for a 1.161 OPS with 42 runs scored, eight doubles, two triples, four home runs, 27 RBI and 15 steals. He has drawn walks at an incredible 20.7% rate and is one of two Huskies with a wOBA north of .500 with a ridiculous .514 mark. First baseman Jake Shusterich is the other at .506 while slashing .369/.491/.643 with 11 doubles, four homers and 25 RBI. Corner outfielders Matt Quade (.359/.427/.612, 9 2B, 3B, 5 HR, 32 RBI) and Paul Steffensen (.321/.389/.560, 7 2B, 2 3B, 5 HR, 27 RBI, 15-15 SB) have anchored the heart of the lineup, while infielders Max Gamm (.330/.412/.443, 4 2B, 3 3B, HR, 14 SB) and Tate Wallat (.822 OPS, 5 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 18 RBI) form a formidable top-of-the-order with Nett.
The Huskies' pitching staff has been rock-solid this season, owning a 4.03 ERA and a 4.00 FIP while holding opponents to a meager .693 OPS. Tommy Thompson has pitched brilliantly over his last two turns in the midweek rotation, working a combined 12.0 innings with 10 strikeouts while scattering eight hits and seven walks. Relievers Nick Brauns (5 APP), Eli Emerson (7 APP, 3.24 ERA, 8.1 IP, 10 K), Jacob Bradley (2 APP, 0.00 ERA), Riley Ahern (2 APP, 0.00 ERA) and Adam Winkels (2 APP, 0.00 ERA) have anchored the bullpen in NSIC action.
Scouting the Marauders
U-Mary sits in seventh place in the NSIC standings, holding a 1.5 game lead over Sioux Falls hunting their first-ever NSIC Championships appearance. The lineup features some impressive power with two-way first baseman Derek Shoen (.325/.401/.615, 9 2B, 2 3B, 7 HR, 25 RBI), third baseman Calvin James (.374/.458/.699, 11 2B, 3B, 9 HR, 32 RBI) and two-way DH Ty Jones (.278/.372/.629, 3 2B, 2 3B, 9 HR, 26 RBI) occupying the two-three-four spots in the order all boasting OPS marks above 1.000. Outfielder Dakota Finley and shortstop Braeton Wixo each are hitting better than .300, while catcher Tyrus Barclay (.298/.362/.468, 5 2B, 3B, 3 HR) sets the table in the leadoff spot.
Righthanders Jonathan Draheim and Derek Shoen have made nearly every midweek rotation turn for U-Mary this season. Draheim is 6-1 over seven starts with a 3.68 ERA across 44.0 innings, holding batters to a .255 average with an extremely impressive 30:4 K:BB ratio. He threw a 7.0-inning no-hitter against Upper Iowa in early April but was shelled in his last start against Bemidji State to the tune of six earned on nine hits in just 4.0 frames of work. Shoen has chartered an 0-3 record over six starts, working 29.0 innings to the tune of a 6.52 ERA and a .306 BAA with a 28:14 K:BB ratio. Mary's bullpen features a slew of power arms, anchored by righty Andrew Brooks (15 APP, 2.12 ERA, 17.0 IP, .148 BAA, 26:11 K:BB), righthander Brandon Gill (7 APP, 9.2 IP, 3.72 ERA, .212 BAA, 10:5 K:BB), LOOGY Jayden Smith (17 APP, 9.26 ERA, 11.2 IP, .283 BAA, 11:10 K:BB) and righty closer Paxton Miller (12 APP, 4 SV, 5.06 ERA, 10.2 IP, .256 BAA, 16:11 K:BB).
