Emma Gentry scored twice as JoJo Chobak and St. Cloud State shut out St. Thomas 4-0 on Saturday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. SCSU earned a weekend sweep and six conference points, outscoring St. Thomas 8-1 in the series to leap back into fifth place. Chobak made 20 saves to post her second shutout of the season as the Huskies outshot St. Thomas 26-20. Jenniina Nylund scored the game's first goal three minutes into the opening period, knocking the puck loose on the forecheck then burying a feed from Olivia Cvar. Klára Hymlárová scored just 49 seconds into the second period, skating ahead on a 2-on-1 rush with Bailey Burton and sending home a perfect pass across the slot. Gentry banged in her first goal of the game midway through the frame to make it 3-0, ripping a heavy wrister past the tender. Gentry tacked on one more in with 30 seconds to play in the game, launching a shot through from the point for her fifth collegiate two-goal game. The Huskies penalty kill made it a perfect weekend, blanking St. Thomas on their three power plays including a critical five-minute major kill in the first. SCSU killed off eight penalties during the series and haven't allowed a goal on their last 17 kills.
Huskies Primer
SCSU enters the series 4-6-0 with a 2-6-0 mark in conference play, fresh off a series sweep of St. Thomas. Jenniina Nylund (7-5-12), Klára Hymlárová (6-2-8), Emma Gentry (6-1-7) and Taylor Lind (2-5-7) headline a highly productive Huskies top six that provided all eight of the team's goals last year. Dayle Ross and Taytum Geier have been stellar as the top defensive pair, combining for seven points and 48 blocks. Sanni Ahola (2-4-0, 2.99 GAA, .916 SV%) and JoJo Chobak (2-2-0, 2.34 GAA, .926 SV%) pair in goal for St. Cloud State, forming a formidable duo.
Scouting Bemidji State
Bemidji State is 3-8-1 and 1-7-0 in WCHA action entering the weekend after a home split against Minnesota State. Five Beavers share the lead in goals while defender Adriana Van De Leest (0-6-6) is the assist and point leader. Hannah Hogenson headlines the Beavers returners in goal, owning a .885 save percentage and a 4.11 goals against average. Bemidji State has struggled to generate offense this season, having scored just eight goals in their last 10 games and being shut out five times in that span.
Series History
The Huskies trail the all-time series 44-51-10 with a 20-26-4 record in Bemidji. Last season SCSU was 1-3-0 against the Beavers, suffering a one-point home sweep and splitting in Bemidji. St. Cloud State has either split with or swept BSU in their last three visits to the Sanford Center, led by Jenniina Nylund's 4-2-6 career line at the rink.
Standings & Such
The Huskies earned six points last weekend to hold fast at sixth in the WCHA standings – four ahead of Bemidji State, just one behind Minnesota Duluth and three shy of Minnesota State. UMD is at No. 1 Minnesota this weekend while the Mavericks host Sacred Heart for a nonconference series, providing ample opportunity for SCSU to gain ground with a strong showing in Bemidji.
Killing Time
Including an 8-for-8 weekend on the kill against St. Thomas, the Huskies have been successful on their last 17 penalty kills. The stellar run has skyrocketed the St. Cloud State PK to second in the league at 86.8%, landing them 13th nationally on the kill.
Special Teams Balance
St. Cloud State's power play complements their stingy kill well, ranking third in the WCHA at 23.1%. That mark places them ninth in the NCAA, one of four conference teams found in the top-10.
Points on Points
Senior center Jenniina Nylund enters the weekend 14th all-time on the program's scoring list, sitting five points from passing Laura Fast. Nylund is eight points away from entering the Huskies' top-10 and currently ranks third in the WCHA with seven goals this season.
Hymlá the Hero
Senior forward Klára Hymlárová is three points away from joining the Huskies 50 Point Club, which would make her the 29th member in program history. She is looking to join Taylor Lind as 2022-23 Huskies to reach the threshold and would become one of three active members alongside Jenniina Nylund.
Daunting Draws
The Huskies have struggled to gain possession on faceoffs this season, winning 41.0% of their draws – second to last in the league. Bemidji State enters the series fifth in the conference at 50.4%, indicating a key area of importance in the series.
Block Party
SCSU's top pair of Taytum Geier and Dayle Ross share the WCHA lead with 24 blocked shots this season, followed closely by Regan Bulger's 20 (7th). The Huskies are second in the league with 15.40 blocks per game.
Stellar Stoppers
Netminders JoJo Chobak (.926) and Sanni Ahola (.916) are fifth and sixth respectively across the league in save percentage this season, placing them both among the nation's top 32 goalies in 2022-23.
