Huskies extend winning streak to three with second-straight shutout in conference play
BEMIDJI, Minn. – Goaltender Sanni Ahola guided St. Cloud State Women's Hockey to their third straight win – and second-straight shutout – with a 2-0 final over Bemidji State on Friday afternoon at the Sanford Center.
Ahola made 15 saves for her third career shutout, turning away a game-high seven shots in the final period to secure the three conference points. The win propels the Huskies into fourth place heading into Saturday, two points ahead of No. 5 Minnesota Duluth.
After a gritty first period in which the two sides combined for just five shots on goal, Emma Gentry wasted no time in the second. Gentry sent the puck down to the end boards, then took a great feed from Taylor Lind into the slot and hurled it past the Beavers goaltender just under two minutes into the period.
A strong pressure by Taytum Geier just outside of the Huskies' defensive zone set up the game's second goal. Geier stepped up and forced a poor BSU pass across the blue line straight to Dayle Ross, who promptly sent an outlet pass to Olivia Cvar. The Huskies' forward used a strong stick to win the puck from a crashing defender then skated ahead on a breakaway, flashing a gorgeous wrister to beat the goalie for the 2-0 lead.
Turning Point
St. Cloud State's penalty kill stood tall in critical moments during each period, first killing off a power play early in the first then holding the Beavers shotless up a goal on the kill in the second. SCSU's special teams capped things off with a crucial kill midway through the third, closing out Bemidji State. The Huskies allowed just two shots total on the kill over six minutes in the box.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Brian Idalski
"First of all, I'm super happy for Sanni. She has been playing well – there have been a couple of opportunities where she's close to having shutouts, and it was nice for her to finish that one out and earn that victory with the shutout. Super happy for her."
On the strong second frame… "It's been an emphasis. It's good that we're taking that to heart and managing that period well. I was disappointed with our start – I didn't feel we were necessarily ready to go from the start. We were very lucky to get out of that first with no damage. I thought Bemidji played well in the first period and kind of took it to us."
On Olivia Cvar's goal… "Well, Liv's a shooter. She's always had a knack for scoring goals since she was young, and it was nice to see her have some success – it was a heck of a shot, bar in. It's nice when we get contributions up and down the roster. Tonight was Liv's night, and we were happy to get her going a little bit offensively."
Keys looking ahead to Saturday's finale… "I think we're always striving for that 60-minute complete effort. I'm not sure we've found it yet, but tomorrow would be a great day to start."
