
Huskies comeback denied in 85-80 loss to Northern State

St. Cloud State overcomes 27 point deficit in the first half
ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University men's basketball team lost to Northern State 85-80 Friday evening. With the loss, the Huskies are now 9-13 overall and 5-9 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play.
GAME SUMMARY
Trailing by as many as 27 in the first half, St. Cloud entered the locker room down 48-38 at halftime thanks to a late offensive surge in the closing minutes. Junior guard Cameron Alexander (Hazelhurst, Mississippi / Hazelhurst) led the Huskies scoring charge, tallying a career-high 13 points in the opening 20 minutes of play. St. Cloud State's bench also outscored the Wolves bench in the opening frame, as the bench accounted for 13 of the team's first half points.
The Huskies continued to whittle away at Northern State's lead, cutting the deficit to four points at 59-54 with 13 minutes remaining in regulation. After a quiet first half, Caleb Donaldson (Bloomington, Ill. / Bloomington) got going in a big way, tying the game at 61-61 with 9:09 left on the clock. The junior guard, along with Ryan Bagley (Pocatello, Idaho / Burley) kept St. Cloud State within striking distance, keeping it a one possession game with multiple clutch plays, both offensively and defensively.
The Wolves pulled away around the nine minute mark, scoring seven consecutive points to regain a 68-61 advantage. The Huskies continued to chip away, once again pulling within one at 70-69. In the end, St. Cloud State simply ran out of time, falling to Northern State 85-80 in the final seconds.
TOP HUSKIES
- Cameron Alexander (Hazelhurst, Mississippi / Hazelhurst) scored a career-high 19 points on 6-14 shooting, including a 4-10 mark from three-point range.
- Caleb Donaldson (Bloomington, Ill. / Bloomington) scored all of his 19 points in the second half, going 7-13 from the floor and 5-6 from the free throw line. The junior additionally tallied five rebounds, seven assists and two blocks in the loss.
- Three other Huskies scored in double-digits Friday evening: Joe Mutimer (Melbourne, Australia / Blackburn South), Matthew Willert (Buffalo, Minn. / Buffalo) and Luke Taylor (Germantown, Wis. / Germantown). Willert and Mutimer both scored 12 points, a career-high for Mutimer, while Taylor added 10.

St. Cloud State will return to action on Saturday, February when the team hosts MSU-Moorhead at 5:30 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.
