Vollmer homers for first time this season, Brauns throws seven strikeouts over 5.1 IP in relief
DAVENPORT, Fla. – The weather continued to be a factor in Florida this week, and after a nearly three-hour rain delay, St. Cloud State (8-5) finished off a comeback to beat Saginaw Valley State 5-2. After three innings, the Cardinals led 1-0 heading into the rain delay, but when play resumed, redshirt junior Cameron Vollmer gave the Huskies a 3-1 lead with a three-run shot. The Cardinals were able to cut the lead to one, but St. Cloud responded with two more of their own off an RBI double and single from redshirt sophomore Tate Wallat (2-for-5, 2B, RBI) and redshirt junior Sam Riola (1-for-4, R, RBI, SB).
Senior Nick Brauns (5.1 IP, 2 H, R, 0 BB, 7 K's) came on in relief and shut down the Cardinals offense in his first win of the season. The Huskies have now won six in a row and have not dropped a game in Florida with a 5-2 win.
KEY MOMENT
The Huskies came to the plate for the first time following the delay in the bottom of the fourth. With two runners on, Vollmer (1-for-3, 3-run HR) launched his first home run of the season to left field to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead.
TOP HUSKIES
Redshirt sophomore outfielder John Nett
"Rain delays are obviously not ideal, but both teams have to deal with it so you do what you can to try to stay mentally locked in… Our pitching has been huge for us on this trip. It makes it easy on the offense when pitching is only giving up two runs a game"
UP NEXT
The Florida road trip will come to close early Sunday morning for St. Cloud State taking on Sioux Falls in a non-conference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. CT at Historic Sanford Stadium. Coverage can be viewed on BeTheBeastEvent+, with links available on the SCSU Baseball schedule page.
