
St. Cloud State Baseball Completes Weekend Sweep of Wayne State

Huskies score nine runs in first four innings, record second straight shutout
WAYNE, NEB. – St. Cloud State Baseball (13-9, 5-3 NSIC) scored early and often in the series finale against Wayne State (11-10, 5-3 NSIC) to complete the sweep of the Wildcats with an 9-0 win on Sunday in Wayne, Neb. In his first start of the season, senior Fabian Villegas (5.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 4 K's) needed 85 pitches in his clean outing for SCSU.
The offense gave Villegas more than enough run support with nine runs in the first four innings. SCSU really took control in the top of third inning putting up a second consecutive four spot to double the lead 8-0. Later in the game, Paul Steffensen's RBI single put the run rule in effect. Redshirt sophomore Eli Emerson (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB) came in to close out the 10-0 win and sweep of Wayne State on the road.
KEY MOMENT
In the top of the second inning, senior Max Gamm (0-for-4, R) reached on a fielder's choice when Wildcats starter Jackson Shelburne committed a throwing error trying to turn a double play. After two runs scored on the error, St. Cloud added two more to take a 4-0 lead.

"I really just had to clear my head at the plate, my only focus was seeing the ball out of the pitcher's hand. This weekend was big for the team. The series really showed what this team is capable of and we're feeling good going into the midweek."

- Sophomore Tyler Schiller (3-for-4, 2 R, 2B) pushed his hitting streak to five games in his first three-hit game of the season.
- Redshirt sophomore Drew Bulson (3-for-4, R, 2B, 2 RBI) finished the weekend series with three RBI.
- Steffensen (2-for-4, R, 2B, 2 RBI) now has 17 RBIs on the season which ranks second on the team.
- Wayne State was shutout in back-to-back games for the first time this season. They had only been shutout one other time coming into the series.
- The Huskies scored a total of 26 runs in the three games in Nebraska. Putting the run rule into effect twice.
- Senior Nick Brauns (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's) and redshirt sophomore was one of the two relievers used on Sunday.
