Huskies win game one in dramatic walk-off, use offensive outburst in game two to sweep CSP
Game One: Huskies 7, Golden Bears 6
St. Cloud State was playing from behind right off the bat when redshirt junior Riley Ahern (4.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 5 K's) gave up a leadoff home run to Jack Young to give CSP a 1-0 lead. The Huskies were able to respond in the bottom of the second with redshirt sophomore John Nett (3-for-4, R, 2B, 2 RBI, BB) hitting a single up the middle to tie the game at one.
The game would get dicey for St. Cloud in the middle innings, as CSP would add four runs from the third inning through the fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead. Before the start was over for Ahern, JT Hoffmann laid down a bunt which led to a throwing error by St. Cloud State that allowed two runs to score.
After a deflating top of the fifth, the Huskies got the response they needed in the home half. Redshirt sophomore Drew Bulson (1-for-4, 2-Run HR) blasted his second home run of the year to cut the lead of the Golden Bears to 5-3. The Huskies would follow that up with two more runs in the sixth when senior Paul Steffensen (1-for-4, R, 2 RBI) singled with two outs to tie the game at five.
The tie game would not last very long, as the Golden Bears took a 7-6 lead in the top of the seventh and look to finish off the Huskies with their final chance at the plate. Redshirt sophomore Tyler Schiller (2-for-3, 2 R, HBP) was hit by a pitch to put the game tying run on the bases for St. Cloud State. The Huskies were down to their final out when senior Max Gamm (1-for-3, R, BB) singled to keep the game alive for the leadoff hitter Nett. Down to his final strike, Nett doubled high off the wall in left field to score Schiller and tie the game at six. After that, an unexpected balk by CSP pitcher Matt Sherman walked home the winning run and the Huskies won, 7-6 on a balk-off in game one.
QUOTABLES
Huskies Outfielder John Nett
"The message during the game one was staying within ourselves and not try to do too much even through were down. It was nice to have a dominating win in game two. It sets us up well for game three to get a sweep tomorrow in front of the home fans at Faber"
Game Two: Huskies 13, Golden Bears 1
SCSU left no doubt in game two, as true freshman Ethan Lanthier (5.0 IP, 3 H, R, 0 BB, 2 K's) cruised to his third win of the season in his first collegiate start. On top of that, he got plenty of run support from the Husky offense.
The bottom of the first saw no surprises, as redshirt junior Sam Riola (2-for-4, 2 R, Solo HR) drove his 12th home run of the season to center field. In the second, St. Cloud State would score nine runs on six hits to take a commanding 10-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Gamm (1-for-2, R, 2B, 2 RBI, BB) doubled to right scoring two, Nett (1-for-4, R, RBI) had an RBI single, Steffensen (2-for-4, 2 R, 2B, 3 RBI) singled to score another and the inning was capped off by a three-run blast from Bulson (2-for-2, 2 R, 3-Run HR).
The Golden Bears got their one run of the ball game in the top of the fifth inning. Eventually St. Cloud would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 13-1 and put the game out of reach. True freshman Owen Anderson (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's) finished off the final two frames on the mound and St. Cloud State run-ruled Concordia St. Paul in seven innings with a 13-1 victory.
