Huskies and Golden Bears will play doubleheader on Sunday in St. Paul
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Baseball (23-10, 15-4 NSIC) looks to stay hot for a midweek doubleheader Thursday against Northern State (12-15, 7-7 NSIC) in Aberdeen, S.D. St. Cloud State will be the home team during the site reversal series at Fossum Field for a 1:00 p.m. CT and 3:00 p.m. CT start. Game one is scheduled for seven innings, followed by a nine-inning game two.
The Huskies and Wolves have played 36 times with St. Cloud holding a commanding 28-8 record against Northern State. Last year, the Huskies played a weekend series in Aberdeen where they swept the Wolves, outscoring them 28-12 over the three games.
Scouting the Huskies
With the Huskies currently on an eight-game winning streak, they rank third in the NSIC behind Augustana and Minnesota State. St. Cloud State is averaging over eight and a half runs per game during that stretch while holding their opponents under three runs. As a team the Huskies rank in the top five of the conference in team batting average (.300), team ERA (4.10), and fielding percentage (.972).
Over the past week, leading the offensive charge is reigning NSIC player of the week redshirt sophomore John Nett (.387/.451/.635, 39 R, 53 H, 14 2B, 4 HR, 25 RBI). Nett was 10-for-18 on the week driving in eight runs, homering in three straight games, and adding six stolen bases. The Huskies have also had a flair for the dramatic, in the last three series SCSU has walked it off at least one time against their opponent including their last time out against Southwest Minnesota State when sophomore Tyler Schiller (.300/.436/.500, 23 R, 10 2B, 3 HR, 14 RBI) singled up the middle to cap off a series sweep.
The Huskies are set to throw redshirt freshman Luke Tupy (3-0, 2.16 ERA, 25.0 IP, 19 G, 6 R, 9 BB, 40 K's) who threw for the first in a month after injury against the Mustangs and pitched five innings of clean baseball allowing one hit and striking out six. If freshman Ethan Lanthier (4-0, 3.00 ERA, 24 IP, 14 H, 10 R, 10 BB, 34 K's) is not used in game one, he'll make his second start of the year in game two.
Scouting the Wolves
Northern State is coming off a big weekend series sweep of Minot State in a doubleheader by scores of 11-7 and 6-5 in extra innings. The month of April has put the Wolves through a gauntlet of the best teams in the conference, facing Minnesota State, #16 Augustana, Minot State and now St. Cloud State consecutively. NSU is 3-4 in those seven games stealing one against the Mavericks.
As an offense the Wolves have struggled to drive in runs this season, but they been able to find their form as of late. Northern State is towards the bottom in the NSIC in runs scored (115) and RBI (106). Against the deep pitching staff of St. Cloud, they'll look to Ramon Vega Jr. (.317/.364/.390/ 14 R, 3 2B, 9 RBI) and Karson Hesser (.297/.304/.462, 14 R, 5 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI) to provide a spark.
The ace for Northern State this season is Max Otto (5-2, 3.14 ERA, 43.0 IP, 41 H, 17 R, 12 BB, 40 K's). Otto has gone five innings or more in six out of his seven starts, most recently an appearance against Augustana where he went six innings giving up five runs on eight hits in a loss. Another name to look out for is Seth Brewer (1-3, 5.72 ERA, 28.1, 25 H, 20 R, 27 BB, 25 K's) whether he comes out of the bullpen or starts on the bump. He has a tendency to walk some batters this season, but look out if he's able to dial it in this week.
Broadcast Information
The series will be broadcast on the NSIC Network with Live Stats provided by Northern State. You can also listen to the game on the KVSC Sports Stream.
