Huskies extend win streak to 15 with 3-0 and 9-2 wins over the Bulldogs
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Baseball (30-10, 22-4 NSIC) kept its win streak alive with a doubleheader sweep of Minnesota Duluth (16-21, 10-14 NSIC) on Wednesday afternoon at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. The win streak has reached 15 games, its most since starting the 2016 season with 23 straight wins. Once again, the Huskies are winning games in thrilling fashion as game one was a 3-0 victory with the second no-hitter in the span of six days, while the bats woke up for a 9-2 victory in game two.
Game One: Huskies 3, Bulldogs 0
Senior Trevor Koenig (7.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K) made his first start in a little over a month after returning from an injury and was nearly perfect in his fifth start of year. He delivered the second no-hitter in the past week for St. Cloud State after fellow southpaw Luke Tupy tossed a perfect game against Northern State on April 21. The lone blemish was a hit by pitch putting the only base runner on the day for UMD in the fifth inning.
Koenig's no-hitter is the seventh of the head coach Pat Dolan era, as he joins Scott Lieser (4/26/11 vs. Northern State, 4/27/12 vs. Minnesota Crookston, 3/22/13 vs. Sioux Falls), Logan Birr (4/27/12 vs. Minnesota Crookston), Kyle Fischer (3/7/13 vs. Missouri S&T) and Tupy (4/21/22 vs. Northern State).
The Huskies got clutch hitting in the first contest of the day, as all three runs for SCSU came with two outs. Redshirt junior Cameron Vollmer (1-for-3, RBI) started the scoring in the fourth with a single driving in sophomore Tyler Schiller (2-for-3, 2 R), who was one of two Huskies with multiple hits in the game. Senior Paul Steffensen (1-for-3, RBI) singled up the middle in the fifth to make it 2-0, then freshman Ethan Navratil (2-for-3, RBI) plated Steffensen with his single to extend the lead. Three runs were more than enough to take game one over UMD.
St. Cloud State LHP Trevor Koenig
"Feels really good to get out of here with a first game win, my first start in over a month is a good one to start on. I definitely knew that it was going on (no-hitter), Tate (Wallat) made that backhanded play down the line, then Nav (Navratil) makes the jumping grab, and then Schiller makes the diving catch at the warning track and it kind of felt like it was destined to happen at that point."
Game Two: Huskies 9, Bulldogs 2
Starting pitching has been a key for the Huskies during their win streak and they looked to redshirt junior Sam Riola (5.0 IP, 2 H, R, 2 BB, 8 K) in game two. Riola punched out a season-high eight hitters in his second start of the year holding the Bulldogs scoreless in the first four of his five innings.
SCSU struck first in the second inning off a Navratil (1-for-4, RBI) single for his ninth RBI in the last six games to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Steffensen (3-for-4, R, RBI) drove in a run on his single in the fourth inning after Riola (1-for-3, 2 R, SB) scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. The Huskies opened their biggest lead of the day with a four-spot in the fifth starting with an RBI triple from redshirt sophomore John Nett (2-for-4, R, 3 RBI). Redshirt junior Tate Wallat (1-for-4, R, RBI) singled and Schiller (1-for-3, 2 RBI) doubled in the inning to make it 7-1 after UMD picked up their first run in the top of the inning.
Seniors Nick Brauns (2.0 IP, H, R, 0 BB, 3 K) and Fabian Villegas (2.0 IP, H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K) held the Bulldogs off the board for three out of their four innings in relief to help close out the sweep for SCSU. Nett added insurance with a two-run single to push the lead to 9-2 and St. Cloud State secured their 15th straight win in their sweep over Minnesota Duluth.
