Huskies extend win streak to 17 behind Tupy no-no, timely hitting in nightcap
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Baseball (32-10, 24-4 NSIC) closed its incredible month of April with two more wins in a doubleheader against Minnesota-Crookston (15-25, 7-14 NSIC) Friday afternoon at Joe Faber Field. Once again, a St. Cloud State starter threw the third no-hitter in span of eight days in a big 10-0 win in game one, however game two was much tighter contest for the Huskies, who held on to a 3-2 win to wrap up the 2022 home schedule.
Game One: Huskies 10, Golden Eagles 0
Whatever water the SCSU pitching staff is drinking in recent weeks worked to perfection once again. Redshirt freshman Luke Tupy (7.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 13 K's) registered his second no-hitter in as many starts while striking out 13 batters on his way to his fifth victory of the season. He allowed two base runners all day after a leadoff walk in the second and another Golden Eagle reaching on a fielder's choice.
It was a pitcher's duel through the first three innings, as Tupy's counterpart Jake Dykhoff matched him with three scoreless innings to begin his outing. He ran into trouble the second time through the lineup and SCSU took advantage in the fourth. The Huskies put up an eight spot on a combination of small ball and some extra base hits. Seniors Paul Steffensen (1-for-3, R, RBI) and Max Gamm (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI) both bunted for RBI singles. Redshirt sophomores John Nett (1-for-3, R, 2B, 2 RBI) and Tate Wallat (2-for-4, R, 2B, 2 RBI) both doubled driving in two runs a piece to give St. Cloud an 8-0 lead.
Eight runs was plenty of run support for Tupy on the mound, but sophomore Mitchell Gumbko (1-for-2, 2 R, 2-Run HR, BB) homered for the second time this season just keeping the ball fair down the left field line to seal a 10-0 victory in game one.
Game Two: Huskies 3, Golden Eagles 2
Minnesota-Crookston saved their two best arms for St. Cloud State to start the series and Alex Koep was up to the task in game two against redshirt junior Riley Ahern (6.0 IP, 3 H, R, 0 BB, 10 K's). Ahern made his first start after leaving his last start early two weeks ago and was sharp in his outing. Koep was excellent as well, but a couple of mistakes cost him and the Golden Eagles.
The Huskies struck first with a two-run homer from redshirt junior Sam Riola (2-for-3, R, 2-Run HR) to give SCSU a 2-0 lead. The Golden Eagles would respond right away in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from Ben Thoma to cut the Huskies lead in half. The game would stay that way until the seventh when junior Cameron Vollmer (1-for-3, Solo HR) connected for his first home run to extend the lead to 3-1.
The Golden Eagles would not go away easy as St. Cloud State looked to win their 17th straight. UMC scored a run in the top of the eighth on a wild pitch to cut the lead back to one. With the tying run on third base senior Nick Brauns (0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's) struck out the final hitter of the inning keeping St. Cloud ahead. Fellow senior Ryan Duffy (0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, K) came in and shut the door on the Golden Eagles comeback for the St. Cloud State doubleheader sweep.
