St. Cloud State Baseball’s NSIC Tournament Run Ends Friday

Riola sets program record for most home runs in a season with 22
BRANDON, S.D. – St. Cloud State Baseball (37-13, 28-5 NSIC) dropped a pair of games to Minnesota State Mankato (37-7, 28-5 NSIC) and Minot State (28-22, 20-12 NSIC) to be eliminated from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament on Friday. The Huskies first game against Minnesota State Mankato was resumed in the sixth inning after being stopped on Thursday due to inclement weather in the area. When it resumed, the Huskies fell 9-2 to the 3-seeded Mavericks. In its second game, St. Cloud State dropped a pitcher's duel to Minot State, 4-3.
GAME 1 – Mavericks 9, Huskies 2
Minnesota State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the game with a run in the first and a pair of runs in the fourth before redshirt junior Sam Riola (Ham Lake, Minn.) added a bomb in the bottom of the fourth to tie the single season record for most home runs with 21. The Mavericks responded right back, scoring a pair of runs in the fifth inning to extend its lead to 5-1. In the sixth inning, the game was forced to be suspended after a massive storm moved through the Sioux Falls area.
When the game resumed on Friday, Mankato added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings and closed the game in the ninth to win 9-2.
GAME 2 – Beavers 4, Huskies 3
In the second game of the day, the Huskies and Beavers were locked in a pitcher's duel as neither team could muster much offense against the game's starting pitchers, St. Cloud State's redshirt junior Riley Ahern (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and Minot State's Dominick Parkhurst. Minot State struck first, scoring on a two-run single in the third, a home run in the fourth and a sac fly in the sixth to jump out to a 4-0 lead.
Riola struck back in the sixth, hitting his fifth home run of the tournament and the 22nd of his season to set a new program record for most home runs in a single season. His two-run blast made the score 4-2. Fast forward to the ninth inning, senior Paul Steffensen (Kenai, Ala.) opened up the final frame with an opposite field blast to pull the Huskies within one run at 4-3, but St. Cloud State couldn't get the tying run home, falling 4-3 to exit the tournament.

St. Cloud State will now await its fate in the NCAA Tournament with the central region field is decided on Sunday.

- Riola went 1-for-4 with a home run against Minnesota State and 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI against the Beavers. He also pitched the final 3.2 innings of the game against Minot State, allowing just one hit and no runs with three strikeouts.
- Steffensen hit his sixth home run of the season against Minot State.
- Riola hit two home runs in the two games to set the new single season program record for home runs with 22, surpassing Reese Gregory's 21 in 2016.
- The Huskies 37 wins in 2022 mark the 12th time the Huskies have won 30 or more games under head coach Pat Dolan.
St. Cloud State will now await its fate in the NCAA Tournament with the central region field is decided on Sunday.
