Huskies look to secure season series sweep of BSU at the HBNHC
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 15 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey celebrates Hockey Day Minnesota this weekend with a key conference series against Bemidji State at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The Huskies and Beavers will drop the puck at 6:00 p.m. CT on Friday with a 1:07 p.m. CT start on Saturday. SCSU and Bemidji State will be part of the Hockey Day Minnesota slate on Saturday, featured on Bally Sports North Extra and Bally Sports Wisconsin Extra with the broadcast production ran by Husky Productions.
THE SERIES
St. Cloud State trails the all-time series 46-51-10 with a 23-24-6 record at the HBNHC. The Huskies swept Bemidji State on the road earlier this season, blanking the Beavers 2-0 in game one while securing the sweep with a 3-1 win in the finale. SCSU forward Emma Gentry has been a nightmare for Bemidji to slow down over her collegiate career, scoring seven goals and one assist for eight points in 10 games played with 33 shots on goal against BSU.
HUSKIES PRIMER
SCSU enters the series 13-14-0 with a 6-14-0 mark in WCHA action. Jenniina Nylund (11-14-25), Klára Hymlárová (15-5-20) and Emma Gentry (12-6-18) headline a dangerous Huskies top-six while Dayle Ross (1-9-10, 61 BLK), Grace Wolfe (1-13-14, 55 BLK), Regan Bulger (0-3-3, 61 BLK) and Taytum Geier (1-5-6, +8, 50 BLK) have anchored the defensive corps. JoJo Chobak (6-6-0, .903 SV%, 2.95 GAA) and Sanni Ahola (7-8-0, .919 SV%, 2.67 GAA) have formed one of the top goaltending duos in the league.
LAST TIME OUT
Junior goaltender Sanni Ahola made a career-high 47 saves as (RV) St. Cloud State took No. 1 Ohio State to overtime on Saturday afternoon at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center before falling 3-2. Ahola's 47 saves included a ridiculous 22-of-23 in the first as the Helsinki, Finland native gave the Huskies one of the finest performances of her career. The Huskies blocked a season-high 33 shots including seven from Grace Wolfe and four each by Dayle Ross, Klára Hymlárová, Taytum Geier and Regan Bulger. Emma Gentry led the club with two assists while Addi Scribner and Svenja Voigt both found the back of the net.
STANDINGS & SUCH
With the second half freshly underway, the Huskies find themselves standing sixth in a hotly-contested fight for fifth place. SCSU enters the weekend sixth in the league with 20 points – just two behind (RV) Minnesota State. St. Cloud State hosts Bemidji State this weekend, No. 6 Minnesota Duluth hosts No. 3 Minnesota, No. 1 Ohio State welcomes (RV) Minnesota State and No. 8 Wisconsin visits St. Thomas.
HOCKEY DAY MINNESOTA
Huskies forward and St. Cloud native Allie Cornelius is well-experienced in Hockey Day Minnesota action, having played with the St. Cloud Icebreakers at Eastman Park during the 2018 Hockey Day Minnesota festivities. Cornelius scored two goals and added an assist as the Icebreakers tied 3-3 with Sartell/Sauk Rapids.
HOCKEY HUMANITARIAN NOTICE
Senior forward Addi Scribner has been named a 2023 Hockey Humanitarian Award nominee, joining Men's Hockey defenseman Spencer Meier to make SCSU the only school to feature a nominee from both their men's and women's program. The Hockey Humanitarian Award, which is celebrating its 28th season, is presented annually to college hockey's finest citizen — a student-athlete who makes significant contributions not only to his or her team but also to the community-at-large through leadership in volunteerism.
GUTSY GEIER
Graduate student defender Taytum Geier has been phenomenal on the blueline all year long, but over her last six games the veteran has truly stepped up when the Huskies have needed her most. Over the six-game stretch to open the second half, Geier has skated to a plus-six with 10 blocks, two assists and six shots on goal while anchoring a unit that is currently skating just six with two sophomores, a true freshman and a forward freshly converted to a D. Geier is also closing in on the program's career games played record, having appeared in 143 contests over her five-year career. The program mark stands at 149, shared by fearsome linemates Cailtin Hogan and Holly Roberts, both 2010 grads who rank one-two in career scoring at SCSU.
GETTING GRITTY
Remaining true to the team's newfound identity, the grind-and-grit Huskies boast the top four shot-blockers in the WCHA. Dayle Ross and Regan Bulger share the league lead with 61 while Grace Wolfe and Taytum Geier go three-four with 55 and 50 respectively. Incredibly, Klára Hymlárová's 37 blocks rank her 10th in the league and first among forwards to give the Huskies five skaters in the top 10. No other skater in the league has more than 45 blocked shots. As a team, St. Cloud State has 404 blocks – good for 14.96 per game – which leads the league in total blocked shots.
SPECIAL TEAMS STONEWALLERS
St. Cloud State's penalty kill has been stellar this season, ranking second across the league and 10th nationally at 88.0%. The Huskies lead the WCHA with 111 penalties taken - 17 more than any other club - and pace the league in penalties taken per game, hitting the box more than four times per night.
POWERING UP
The Huskies complement their strong PK with a dynamic power play that presently ranks fourth in the league and seventh in the country at 22.5%. Klára Hymlárová has scored eight power play goals, sharing the lead in both the WCHA and NCAA with Ohio State's Sophie Jaques. When SCSU scores on the power play they are 10-1-0 compared to a 3-13-0 record when they do not score on the advantage.
LOOKING AT THE LEADERBOARDS
Two Huskies can be found across the WCHA offensive leaders early in the second half. Klára Hymlárová is ninth in the league with 15 goals and leads the league in power play goals. Jenniina Nylund has the seventh-most faceoff wins with 223 while Hymlárová is ninth with 203.
STELLAR STOPPERS
Goaltenders JoJo Chobak and Sanni Ahola have combined to provide SCSU with a phenomenal pairing, currently standing as one of just three pairs in the league to both have at least a .900 save percentage.
NYLUND'S CLIMB
Jenniina Nylund's assist at the East/West Showcase moved her out of a tie for ninth in the program's all-time scoring list as she now stands alone with 86 points. This season, Nylund has 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points.
