Huskies drop championship match 3-0
WAYNE, Neb. – No. 8 (No. 4 seed) St. Cloud State Volleyball (22-8, 13-5 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) fell in the NSIC Tournament Championship Match to No. 4 (No. 2 seed) Concordia-St. Paul in straight sets on Sunday afternoon at Rice Auditorium, 26-24, 25-21 and 25-18. The Golden Bears (28-2, 16-2 NSIC) won their seventh NSIC Tournament Championship and stopped SCSU from winning its third in a row.
The Huskies struggled to sustain their offensive efforts and ended the game hitting a mere .183 and with 21 attacking errors as CSP hit .340 with only 14 attacking errors. The Golden Bears totaled more team blocks (13.0) and service aces (six) than the Huskies who had 2.0 and four respectively.
NSIC Player of the Year, senior outside hitter Kenzie Foley (Sergeant Bluffs, Iowa) recorded a game-high 17 kills on .364 hitting. The Huskies owned a .410 kill percentage on sets by sophomore All-NSIC Second Team honoree setter Emma Berran (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) as she provided a team-high 32 assists. Freshman middle blocker Hannah Bruskiewicz (Rogers, Minn.) sent down eight kills on an incredible .778 hitting. Freshman Shelby Kimm (North Liberty, Iowa) did a little bit of everything for the Huskies, recording six kills, six digs and two service aces.
Foley and Bruskiewicz were named to the All-Tournament Team. Foley hit .300 with 5.45 kills/set, which was the most in the tournament. She contributed 5.64 points/set (first in the tournament) and 3.00 digs per set (tied for 10th). Bruskiewicz hit .447 (third best) with 2.47 kills/set. She tallied 3.18 points/set and 0.73 blocks/set.
QUOTABLES – St. Cloud State head coach Chad Braegelmann
"It was a very solid week overall for the Huskies, but today was not our best day. We started the first and second set really well but just couldn't find a way to finish them. Concordia was really firing on all cylinders today. We struggled at times to sideout and they had numerous long serving runs. Kenzie (Foley) and Hannah (Bruskiewicz) did a nice job offensively again but it wasn't enough overall. We just have to play complete volleyball in order to beat a team like Concordia."
