All-American southpaw strikes out seven over 4.0 scoreless in season debut, SCSU steals eight bases
FORT WORTH, Fla. – St. Cloud State Baseball (5-7, 0-0 NSIC) lefthander Luke Tupy struck out seven across 4.0 scoreless innings as he and the Huskies blanked Caldwell (4-3, 0-0 CACC) 10-0 to snap their three-game losing skid. The Huskies lineup drew nine walks and collected eight hits while stealing a season-high eight bases, giving the Cougar staff fits on the basepaths.
Luke Tupy was marvelous in his season debut, striking out seven over 4.0 scoreless innings of work while scattering two hits and a pair of walks to earn the win. The southpaw did not allow a runner to reach third base, bouncing back after opening his day with a pair of walks to retire 12 of the final 14 batters he faced.
SCSU got on the board early in the first as John Nett (0-for-2, 2 BB, 2 R, 2 SB) reached on an error then went first-to-third on a Sam Riola (2-for-3, BB, 3 R, 3 SB) single. Riola stole second, then both runners scored as Garrett Bevacqua (0-for-3, 2 RBI) reached on another error. The Huskies added their third run of the game in the home half of the third with some well-executed small ball: Riola led off with a single, stole second then advanced to third on a Sawyer Smith (0-for-2, 2 BB, 2 R) groundout to the right side. Bevacqua plated Riola with a groundout, making it a 3-0 game.
Caldwell's wheels fell off in the fifth inning as the Huskies posted a crooked number with five runs on two hits and six walks, stealing four bases in the frame. One inning later, a pinch-hit two-run single off the bat of Ben Clapp (1-for-1, 2 RBI) provided St. Cloud State with their decisive 10-0 lead.
Grady Fuchs struck out one over a 1-2-3 fifth inning to earn his first hold of the season while Kole Krier punched out a pair in his collegiate debut, firing 2.0 hitless innings to close things out.
